The Negative Influence of Organizational Culture On Nurses
Organizational culture has a significant impact on the quality of care provided within the care facility as well as patients’ experience and satisfaction. Organizational culture is a set of behaviors, values, and cultures exhibited within the health care organization (Barkhordari-Sharifabad et al., 2017). Unrealistic organizational culture (values, rules, and behaviors) can diminish the efforts of nurses to make them powerless. One aspect of the organizational culture that can make nurses powerless is the lack of communication. Lack of communication leads to inadequate collaboration among nurses, poor care coordination by nurses, and unclear directions from the upper management (Thomas, 2018). These behaviors make nurses powerless by hampering their efforts to offer quality health care to their patients.
Another barrier includes a lack of support for nurses to engage in continued education. Nurses are urged to engage in continued education and training to update their skills and achieve the highest level of education (Spring Arbor University, 2020). Nurses who achieve the highest level of education are empowered due to more advanced skills, increased job opportunities, and competitive salaries. Nurse leaders and organizational management often weaken nurses by denying them support and time to pursue further education (Spring Arbor University, 2020). Another important area is nurses’ involvement in decision-making processes. Not involving nurses in decision-making processes weakens them by denying them the opportunity to address some of the challenges they face. Nurses are part and parcel of the health care system. They spend more time with patients than other health care professionals (Barkhordari-Sharifabad et al., 2017). Nurses experience the most challenges in health care due to their closeness to patients.
