Several women of African descent have made significant contributions to their societies. While some are well-known in their countries and globally, some have been overlooked in history. Here is a list of areas that these women have contributed to:

· Activism in the following areas: Anti-slavery, Civil Rights, Independence, health, labor movements, environment, human rights

· Military

· Art

Locate at least three sources from a journal, a book chapter, an unpublished thesis, a documentary, and a website that you will review for this essay with information pertaining to any one woman from any group (a-c) of your choice. Search for some online journals via EIU’s Booth Library.

Cite ALL sources properly in the body of the essay. Only list in the reference page the sources that you have cited in the essay.

Here are some suggested examples of women:

a) Africa: Yaa Asantewa, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Wangari Maathai, Maryam Babangida, Winnie Mandela, Miriam Makeba, Edna Adan, Lupita Nyong’o and Getrude Mongella OR any African woman of your choice that has been overlooked in history (i.e., received less scholarly/public attention).

b) Caribbean: Nanny of Jamaica, Dona Mariana Grajales de Maceo, Claudia Jones, Elma François, Celia Sanchez, Portia Simpson-Miller, and Lucille Mathurin Mair OR any Caribbean woman of your choice that has been overlooked in history (i.e., received less scholarly/public attention).

c) African American: Harriet Tubman, Maria Stewart, Sojourner Truth, Mary Church Terrell, Ida B. Wells, Anna Julia Cooper, Mary MacLeod Bethune, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Baker, Shirley Chisholm, Cecily Tyson, Althea Gibson, Maya Angelou, Angela Davis, and Condoleezza Rice OR any African American woman of your choice that has been overlooked in history (i.e., received less scholarly/public attention).

Write an essay 4-5 pages in which you do ALL of the following:

a. Introduce your topic and using specific examples briefly explain how each source you reviewed was useful for addressing the role of the woman you selected (Be sure to provide at least one specific piece of information each source offered). (1/2 a page)

b. Provide a brief biographical information of the individual’s family background, education/training (about 1/2 a page)

c. Explain what made this individual become committed to this cause i.e. beliefs and factors that influenced/motivated her. Which factor had the most influence and why?

d. Discuss three important contributions the person made to society (cite specific examples of the roles she played). Which of these contributions received the most attention and why?

e. Discuss two challenges she faced and two ways in which she tried to transcend gender stereotypes.

f. Briefly discuss at two lessons others can learn from the person’s life, role and challenges and write a brief conclusion.
