For those that believe and have come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal saviour have such a deep faith, that to ask them to think in a scientific manner causes tension. We believe that he who died for our sins, was resurrected and endured such suffering so that we may live and have eternal life is proof enough. For many of us, our belief systems have been in place since we were young chlldren and to now try and alter the very essence of who we are, is a difficult task.

Scientism causes tension, because many feel it challenges their beliefs and attempts to discredit what we believe to be true. No one has seen the Lord, but we have faith, we trust in him and we believe in his word. We do not feel this needs to be proven by someone who does not believe. The media plays into the tensions as well, delivering information that some do not agree with and never will.

As a nurse, it is a calling, however, I feel that because we have all had experiences with life and death at times, on a regular basis, the beliefs we have about the hereafter are furthur strengthened, we see patients die from terminal conditions, in accidents, and we deal with those emotions. By seeing it, in our profession, I know for myself, it makes you come to terms with your own feelings regarding life, death and what’s on the other side.No one can attempt to change what many spend their entire lives working toward, and that’s to go to heaven and see loved ones and be with their Lord. The elder generation esecially, for example, both of my grandmas are devoted, christian women who love the lord.

As a nurse and as a christian, everyone is entitled to their beliefs, we are taught to love and care for them as we would our own parents and grandparents. Although differing beliefs will always be, as nurses we “..must promote fruitful interaction of science and religion in healthcare setting.” ( GCU.2015) Our job is to care, respect and foster the beliefs of those we care for, not to judge or infringe our beliefs on them. The opposition and tension of religion will always be, because what we believe in,what we have been taught and what we have experienced in our lives. Life experiences shape who we are, who we become, it shapes our religion and our practices. Practices that are not easily changed.
