This course has enabled me to build on my pre-existing knowledge in various areas of nursing. The course has enabled me to meet several Essentials of the Baccalaureate Education in Nursing including Essential II on ‘Basic Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care and Patient Safety’ (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2022). This Essential emphasizes the need for nurses to demonstrate skills and knowledge in quality improvement, leadership skills, and patient safety which are vital in the provision of quality health care. The other essential that I have been able to meet is Essential VI, ‘Inter-professional Communication and Collaboration for Improving Patient Health Outcomes.’ (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2022). This Essential emphasizes the importance of communication and collaboration among healthcare professionals as fundamental in the delivery of safe and quality care. I have also been able to meet Essential VIII on ‘Professionalism and professional Values.’ This Essential emphasizes professionalism and values of autonomy, altruism, human dignity, social justice, and integrity which are fundamental to nursing.
I will integrate my newly learned theory into current practice making it the basis for caring for patients and making clinical decisions. The integration of the above-mentioned Essentials into nursing practice is likely to result in improved patient outcomes. The Essentials will ensure that as a nurse I collaborate and communicate with other professionals, observe ethical principles of nursing when dealing with patients, and most importantly participate in quality improvement projects in my clinical settings.
This course content helped me to build on my knowledge from my pre-licensure program by enabling me to learn about Continuous Quality Improvement a process that has been linked with an improvement in patient outcomes, a reduction of hospitalizations, and overall patient safety (Hill et al., 2020). I am therefore likely to be an active participant in a continuous quality improvement project based on my interactions with patients and hospital data.
