Unit 5 Discussion Board
Nursing students are able assess whether they have gained new knowledge after completing a course by engaging in personal reflection. This course generated numerous insights about leadership. The most compelling leadership topics learned in this course include; the importance of leadership theories in nursing leadership, the nurse leader’s role in ensuring patient safety and preventing patient care events, and how evidence-based research guides decision-making in nurse leadership. Participating in discussions enhanced my understanding of leadership concepts taught during the course. For example, through group discussions, I was able to understand how the patient care environment influences the choice of leadership models. I also learned through my colleagues that nurse leaders are charged with the responsibility of choosing and implementing leadership models that will enable them to address patient care issues, promote patient safety, and improve healthcare quality within their settings. Holding routine meetings with my mentor and reviewing scholarly leadership resources could have yielded additional valuable information.
I must admit that the course content built my prior leadership knowledge from my pre-licensure program. From my prelicensure program, I did not adequately understand that nurse leaders are involved in operational budget preparation for their department. Besides, I had a limited understanding of the major challenges that are facing nurse leaders today. After completing the course content, I was able to learn that nurse leaders should understand issues related to budgeting because they are directly involved in budget development and implementation processes within their departments (Rundio, 2020). I have also learned that staff shortages are among the management challenges that are affecting nurse leaders today. My new leadership knowledge will improve my future nursing practice as an operating room nurse aspiring to become a peri-operative director. I will apply the knowledge acquired from the course to improve my leadership practice as I demonstrate adherence to the California Nursing Practice Act.
