Unit 1 DB 2 Advanced Nursing Practice

Nurses usually occupy different ranks depending on the level of education they have attained and the types of certifications already acquired. In this respect, there are general nurses as well as advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) (DeNisco, 2015). Additionally, some nurses can perform advanced nursing practice roles but they do not qualify as advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Distinguishing between advanced practice nursing roles and advanced nursing practice roles can help today’s nurses to reflect upon their strengths and weaknesses and develop goals necessary for personal, educational, and career growth (DeNisco, 2015). The purpose of this discussion is to describe the differences and similarities between the advanced nursing practice role and the advanced practice nursing role. It will also identify the skills and traits that one requires to perform their respective roles effectively.

Similarities and Differences

There are some similarities and differences between the advanced nursing practice role and the advanced practice nursing role. Advanced nursing practice role is performed by a master’s- or doctorate-prepared nurse. Master’s- or doctorate-prepared nurses can perform advanced nursing roles that baccalaureate nurses cannot perform. On the other hand, an APRN role is performed by a registered nurse who has obtained the license and certification to practice as a nurse practitioner (NP), a clinical nurse specialist (CNS), a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), or a certified nurse midwive (CNM) (DeNisco, 2015). While APRNs can perform advanced nursing practice roles, a master’s- or doctorate-prepared nurse does not qualify to be an APRN unless he or she obtains relevant licenses and certifications in one of the four APRN roles. However, it is important to note that the APRN role and the advanced nursing practice role are similar in that they must be performed by registered nurses who have been authorized and licensed to provide care to patients by the Board of Nursing of their respective states (Arthur et al., 2019). The professional nursing groups that are allowed to engage in advanced nursing practice include APRNs, clinical nurse leaders, masters-prepared nurses, and doctorate-prepared nurses.

APRN Roles

APRN roles are grouped in terms of specialty. The four specialty areas of the APRN roles include nurse practitioner (NP), clinical nurse specialist (CNS), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and a certified nurse midwive (CNM) (American Nurses Association, n.d.). NPs provide preventive and primary care services to families and populations. Their patient populations comprise people of different age groups with varied healthcare needs and they perform the roles of disease diagnosis, treatment, prescription of medications, ordering tests, and interpreting test results (DeNisco, 2015). CRNAs provide anesthesia services to patients. CNSs provide specialized care to patients with distinctive clinical issues such as mental health problems and cancer. The primary role of a CNM revolves around caring for women across age groups. They provide gynecology care as well as advice related to family planning (Wheeler et al., 2022). APRNs have advanced educational qualifications in nursing such as a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

Reason for Obtaining a Master’s Degree

I am an operating room nurse and my goal is to become a Perioperative Director of the operating room. My reason for obtaining a Master’s Degree is to obtain advanced skills and competencies that will enable me to perform effectively in my planned role. The key skills and competencies that I intend to have after completing the master’s degree include organizational and system leadership, evidence-based practice, population health, health policy and advocacy, interprofessional collaboration, health informatics, and quality improvement among others (AACN, 2022). These competencies and skills are highly essential for effective performance as a Perioperative Director.

Skills and Traits Necessary for a Perioperative Director and How They Will Be Used

A Perioperative Director is an operating room nurse with managerial responsibilities. An operating room nurse needs specialized skills and traits to perform effectively as a Perioperative Director. These skills and traits include collaborative practice, effective communication, patient advocacy, resilience, and good critical thinking skills (Blomberg et al., 2022). Again, a perioperative director should be able to practice autonomously and demonstrate respect for patients’ values and preferences. I anticipate using these skills and traits in my future roles as a Perioperative Director to effectively manage the activities and processes in the operating room.

Skills and Traits Already Acquired, Gaps to Be Filled, and Conclusion

I already possess some of the skills and traits that I need to succeed in my future role as a Perioperative Director. I am an operating room nurse with 22 years of experience in circulating and scrubbing all cardiac, vascular, and trauma cases. I run the cardiac team and I have a strong foundation in critical thinking skills, effective communication, and collaborative practice. The experience that I have gained working with surgical patients and healthcare teams prepare me adequately for the role (Blomberg et al., 2022). However, I still need to strengthen my resilience and patient advocacy skills to enhance my effectiveness in the planned role. In conclusion, I believe that I will be able to acquire these skills through training, benchmarking from my seniors, and consultation.
