Introduction
The world is currently facing the highest rate of human mobility ever experienced in history. Therefore, cultural diversity is enriching every continent and region across the world. The health care environment is facing cultural diversity like never before (Antón-Solanas et all, 2021). Health care professionals need to be competent to care for people of different cultural backgrounds. This paper provides a summary and analysis of an article related to transcultural nursing.
Summary of the Article
The purpose of this article is to analyze European student nurses´ experience of learning cultural competence and of working with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. Antón-Solanas et al. (2021) reiterated that the nursing profession has focused on cultural competence both among students and qualified nurses. In this study, a phenomenological approach was utilized to gather the perceptions and experiences of learning cultural competence among nursing students. Participants were undergraduate students pursuing the Bachelor of Nursing Program at various universities in Belgium, Spain, Turkey, and Portugal. They used focus groups for data collection (Antón-Solanas et all, 2021). The researchers gathered students’ perceptions, experiences, attitudes, and beliefs regarding transcultural nursing. The sessions were audio-recorded and transcribed. The original transcriptions were then translated into English by English-speaking experts.
The results of this study were organized into themes. The first theme is the concept of culture/cultural diversity. This theme incorporates the perception of students regarding the role of culture in society and the implications of living in a multicultural society. The majority of students believed that culture is related to nationality, race, and ethnicity (Antón-Solanas et all, 2021). Others associated culture with lifestyle, religion, and tradition. Students perceived cultural diversity positively as something that makes society colorful. Theme two is personal awareness which examined participants’ perception of their level of cultural competence. The majority were not confident in their level of cultural competence. They cited a lack of knowledge of specific minority cultures and a lack of practical experience (Antón-Solanas et all, 2021). Students suggested that lack of cultural knowledge can be addressed by showing an empathic, respectful, and open attitude towards patients of different cultural backgrounds.
Theme three of the results focused on the impact of transcultural in nursing. Nursing students felt that differences in culture affect care decisions. Their perception is that cultural differences affect patients’ health and disease (Antón-Solanas et all, 2021). They provided examples of both positive and negative cultural practices. There four was learning cultural competence. Here, the student nurses describe their experiences of learning cultural competence either as part of their curriculum or co-curriculum. the participants mentioned strategies and alternatives to improve their level of cultural competence (Antón-Solanas et all, 2021). Specifically, they mentioned clinical simulation with real patients from diverse cultural backgrounds, role-play techniques, courses in communication and (cultural) conflict resolution, and increasing the presence of cultural competence in the nursing curricula.
Last but not least, the results presented the fifth theme which examined learning cultural competence during practice placements. Placements provide cultural exposure and learning opportunities that are important to students (Antón-Solanas et all, 2021). Students admitted that the quality of nursing care provided is low, hence, does not fully address the needs of culturally diverse patients. Students identified barriers to transcultural nursing such as nurses’ workload, language barrier, lack of specific resources (or knowledge of these resources), and a certain degree of prejudice against a specific group of people. The authors concluded that students had variable perceptions of transcultural care (Antón-Solanas et all, 2021). However, they were able to articulate their learning and proposed strategies to integrate transcultural nursing content into their curriculum. The author recommends that students be heard.
Relevance of Transcultural Nursing and its Impact on Nursing Practice
Transcultural nursing describes being sensitive to cultural differences when handling patients, their needs, and their presences. According to Antón-Solanas et al. (2021), transcultural nursing care is more relevant in healthcare because of the increasing cultural diversity in almost every region across the globe. Transcultural care can only be achieved when nurses are culturally competent. According to Antón-Solanas et al. (2021), cultural competence is an essential component of healthcare. The article is relevant to transcultural care because it dwells around caring for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. Culturally competent patient care helps in improving patient satisfaction and positive patient outcomes.
Transcultural nursing has a positive influence on nursing practice. It can improve the understanding of every patient including their belief, customs, and preferences. All this information helps determine the best approach to give the patient in terms of communication and treatment regimen (Antón-Solanas et all, 2021). The health care facility will have a good reputation when transcultural nursing is applied. Patient satisfaction will improve and more positive patient outcomes will be achieved. Transcultural nursing care will improve the self-awareness of health professionals within the care facility. According to Antón-Solanas et al. (2021), it is important for nurses first become aware of their cultural beliefs, values, and attitudes before learning about other cultural ways. Therefore, transcultural care is relevant in healthcare and has even more positive impacts on the entire nursing practice.
Conclusion
Cultural diversity in healthcare is currently an issue of concern. Transcultural nursing care is important to achieve patient satisfaction. Most nursing students doubt their cultural competence. Medical schools should improve their cultural competence teaching strategies.
