The role of Business Process Reengineering A Research Proposal

Business process reengineering (BPR) is a management approach that has lately been popular in healthcare. It entails new and older management approaches and, in many cases, are associated with   positive results. Managers rely on BPR to streamline cross-sectional functions of the organization to reduce cost, improve service quality, increase revenue and minimize risk (Vilasdechanon & Sopandang, 2018). The popularity of BPRs in healthcare is much attributed to how it leverages on technology to improve care services. Consequently, BPR has become a hot topic within the discipline of management information systems, with numerous studies conducted within different fields to develop more knowledge on the status of BPR in healthcare.

The main aim of the proposed study is to review a variety of literature on BPR published within the past five years to have a comprehensive understanding of the developments in the area of BPR and understand the future research directions. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, there is a paucity of BPR review in healthcare, especially within the last five years to inform evidence-based practice.

The proposed study will focus more on the current developments within BPR in healthcare as well as how BPR is currently practiced in terms of methodologies and approaches. As such, the study will contribute significant knowledge for better practice.

Research objectives

  1. To explore the current BPR developments in healthcare both within practice and academia
  2. To identify is the role of BPR in healthcare practice and management
  • To explore the challenges faced by healthcare managers in implementing BPR within healthcare

The study will rely on the following outline:

Defining BPR

Many scholars have come up with different definitions of BPR and the changes it involves reducing cost and improve operational efficiency (Nurfadhilah et al 2021). The proposed study will explore these definitions to have a clearer understanding of what BPR really means within the healthcare context.  In this regard, the proposed study will explore the many definitions of BPR, comparing all of them to elucidate its most accurate conceptualization.

The Importance of BPR in Healthcare

BPR has been claimed to be a solution to most of the problems facing health organizations, including low efficiency, poor quality of care and high costs (Antokhin et al, 2021). The proposed study will evaluate how BPR is practically applied to alleviate these challenges, and the role limitations healthcare managers experience in the process.

Application of BPR in healthcare

This section will delve deeper into the steps involved in implementing BPR within the healthcare sector. It investigates specific components of the healthcare systems that can be reengineered including changes in service delivery, process sequence, or physical structure. This will provide practical guidance to managers and practitioners on what to expect when they attempt to reengineer these components.

Technology and BPR

This section will focus on the role of technology in BPR. It will identify how managers can leverage on technology to automate service provision processes, the skills and resources needed to do that and the impact it has on the entire BPR process. More importantly, this section will explore the advantage of integrating IT into the BPR process. It will explore the literature on whether technology can contribute to reduced turn-around time, minimize corruption within the process, reduce fraud and promote more precision into the service delivery processes.

Conclusion and Recommendation

This section will give an overview of the study findings. It will recap what the study has found to be the definition of BPR, its importance in healthcare, its application and its integration with technology. Ultimately, the study will suggest a few implications for practice and recommendations for future research.
