The Psalms, Week 3 Assignment

  1. What are the different categories of psalms? Discuss any two that appeal to you.

There are 14 different types of psalms in the bible. They include Hymns or Songs of Praise, Psalms of Thanksgiving, Psalms of Lament or Complaints, Psalms of Suffering, Psalms of Blessing and Cursing, Imprecatory Psalms, Royal Psalms, Enthronement Psalms, Psalms of Wisdom and Instruction, Trust Psalms, Penitential Psalms, Psalms of Ascent (Pilgrimage), Messianic Psalms, and Psalms of Suffering. Psalms of Wisdom and Instruction teach about the fear of the Lord as spoken by teachers of wisdom and sages of Israel. They encourage people to pursue virtue/wisdom and avoid vices. Some of such verses include 49, 52, 73, and so on. Royal psalms revolve around the reign of King David and describe the Kings of Israel (Roncace and Weaver, 2014). They take the tone of celebration of royal coronation and wedding.

  1. Explain and evaluate how Black people may connect psalm 137 to their life

Psalm 137 depicts a time when the Israelites were enslaved in Babylon. It is a psalm of the traumatized, depicting assault and brutalization of the innocent. Blacks identify well with oppression, trauma, and slavery, given their past experiences. Blacks were grabbed from their homeland and sold into slavery which became their exile. Just like the Israelites, they were traumatized and oppressed by their masters. Even after the abolition of the slave trade, blacks were still oppressed and were given unequal treatment with their white counterparts. Up until now, Blacks still feel marginalized. This is why Plasms 137 resonates well with blacks because they see themselves as the oppressed Israelites in exile who can still reminiscence about Jerusalem (hope) amidst pain.
