Discussion #1
Social work theories are important because they facilitate better understanding of human behavior using evidence-based approaches. Theories serve as the main sources of knowledge when defining client problems since they provide social workers with a sense of purpose and direction. Additionally, they provide social workers with frameworks to address clients’ problems (Walsh, 2014). I have been using theory in my practice to gain better understanding of my client issues. Theories also help me implement my practice in a methodological manner by using them as frameworks for client assessment and intervention. Social work theories have helped me understand that human behavior is complex and influenced by many factors, including individual and environmental factors, which are crucial during client assessment and when selecting interventions.
Discussion #2
The perspective that most resonates with me is the structural family theory. To me, family is an important aspect of every individual’s life and as explained in the structural family theory, family dynamics play a critical role in maintaining specific client problems. I feel that understanding the family structure is very important when identifying client issues and developing effective interventions. In most cases, it is important to involve family in client treatment to ensure positive outcomes for both clients and their families.
The human behavior theory posits that individual behavior and learning can be explained using environmental interactions. The theory explains that behavior is influenced by both the environment and learning that occurs through experience. People have different experiences and live in different environments. Therefore, they are bound to have different behavior and experience different types of oppression (Walsh, 2014).
