Purnell Model for Cultural Competence
Introduction
Cultural competence is an important skill and measurement of quality in health care. Cultural competence can be defined as the ability of health care providers to understand, acknowledge, and interact with people from different cultures and belief systems. It has become an integral part of health care and is listed as one of the core competencies (Brooks et al., 2019). Nurses and other health care workers should have sufficient information regarding various cultural backgrounds and customs to allow them to provide holistic patient assessments. There are several models organized to guide cultural competence among multidisciplinary members of the health care team. The Purnell model for cultural competence is one of the models designed to guide cultural competence in various workplaces (Purnell & Fenkl, 2019). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the Purnell Model for Cultural Competence and its relevance for advanced practice nurses, as well as the importance of effective communication that promotes cultural competence.
The Purnell Model for Cultural Competence and its relevance for advanced practice nurse
The Purnell Model of Cultural Competence is an organizing framework to guide cultural competence among multidisciplinary health care teams in primary, secondary, and tertiary settings. The model focuses on providing the basis for understanding the different attributes of cultures (Purnell & Fenkl, 2019). The model is often presented in a diagram with paralleled circles representing aspects of persons, families, and communities, as well as a global society. The Purnell model includes 12 domains such as overview or heritage, communication, family roles and organization, workforce issues, biocultural ecology, and others (Purnell & Fenkl, 2019). These domains are considered important in evaluating the characteristics of various ethnic groups.
The Purnell model of competence is relevant to the advanced practice nurse for many reasons. The model provides a framework for all advanced practice nurses to learn and characteristics and concepts of culture. It also defines the circumstances that impact individuals’ cultural worldviews in the context of historical perspectives (Purnell & Fenkl, 2019). This model can help nurses in their practice, providing the opportunity to communicate efficiently and effectively with their patients.
The importance of effective communication that promotes cultural competence
Effective communication that promotes cultural competence is necessary to improve patients’ experiences and outcomes. Culturally sensitive communication is important in healthcare because it allows the professionals to effectively collaborate with professionals as well as attend to patients from other cultures (Brooks et al., 2019). It allows health care providers to respect the values and beliefs of others as well as reduce barriers that often exist between patients and health workers. Communications that are based on cultural competence prevent intentional and unintentional stereotypes that tend to occur in healthcare (Brooks et al., 2019). When all these elements of good practice are achieved, high-quality care is obtained leading to more patient experiences and patient outcomes.
Conclusion
Cultural competence is an integral part of the quality of patient care. The Purnell model for cultural competence provides a framework or guideline for achieving cultural competence in different settings. The model is often presented in a diagram with paralleled circles representing aspects of persons, families, and communities, as well as a global society. It includes 12 different domains, which are important when evaluating the characteristics of different ethnic groups. It promotes culturally competent conversation which is necessary for improving experience and patient outcomes.
