The policy is a presidential executive order that was released to increase support for people with mental and behavioral health needs. The purpose of the policy is to prevent suicides, drug-related deaths, and poor behavioral outcomes associated with COVID-19 containment measures (Exec. Order No. 13954, 2020). COVID-19 has exacerbated mental health problems, including suicide and related deaths. Therefore, this policy is purposefully designed to address such incidents.

The things the policy aims to achieve include engaging resources of the federal government to address behavioral and mental outcomes of the affected individuals, increase and promote availability and access to quality continuing care after the initial crisis resolution to improve mental health. The policy increased the availability of telehealth to make care more accessible (Exec. Order No. 13954, 2020). The most important achievement is to establish a coronavirus mental health working group that facilitates all government programs against mental health conditions.

This policy targets a wider population of the united states. It considers the mental health of every person who is affected psychologically due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These people include minorities, veterans, and seniors (Talevi et al., 2020). Other categories of people include small business owners, children, and individuals potentially affected by domestic violence or physical abuse. Additionally, those living with disabilities and those with substance use disorder are covered.

The primary need the policy was created to address, therefore, is the increased mental and behavioral health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 30% of Americans struggled with mental health or substance abuse problems due to the COVID-19 pandemic (Talevi et al., 2020). Additionally, 10.7 percent of Americans experienced suicidal thoughts. Therefore, there was a need for a policy to address these issues.

One of the important institutions that are involved in this policy is worship institutions. The policy encourages the creation and accessibility of support groups in worship places. They may also consider mentorship programs for their members to reduce mental health problems (Exec. Order No. 13954, 2020). These activities can change one’s life and improve their mental situation.
