Perspectives in Patient Education

Introduction

Patient education is a crucial element of patient care to achieve quality health care delivery and positive patient outcomes. Patient education is the process of influencing patient behavior and attitudes to change positively to improve health by providing the patient with skills and knowledge they might be lacking (Bastable, 2017). The purpose of this paper is to answer all the provided questions required for the completion of the assignment.

Examples of psychosocial factors impacting health care professional

Some of the psychological factors include stress, depression, hopelessness, low self-esteem, and work demands. These issues have a negative influence on patient education (Bastable, 2017). Once the health care professional is affected psychologically, their ability to conduct effective patient education becomes compromised.

Examples of psychosocial factors impacting patients

Patients may experience depression, stress, family problems substance abuse, and anxiety. Again these psychosocial factors have negative impacts on patients’ ability to comprehend the knowledge and have a successful patient education (Bastable, 2017). These psychosocial factors have a negative influence on both patients and health care providers.

Meaning of personality styles

Personality styles are an important topic in health care and other industries. According to, a personality style is a consistent pattern of thinking, feeling, or behavior over time across relevant situations (Taylor, 2020). The three major personality styles include Extroverts, Introverts, and Ambiverts. Patients should be educated to understand that no personality is better than the other. Self-perception is an important factor that can help patients identify their personality styles and how to overcome challenges associated with them (Taylor, 2020). Self-perception can help patients control their mood, behavior, and personal judgment.

Steps in adjustment to illness

There are five main stages of adjustment to illness, including denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. During denial, the patient refused to believe the diagnosis or to believe in activities that push the body beyond limits (UPMC, 2022). Anger may lead to passive resistance to treatment that may lead to further damage. During bargaining, the patient tries to express uncertainty by speculating the things they feel if they do they will be well. It may mean giving preferences in search of lost health. Depression is a hard stage of adjustment and the patient may become sad, weak, and anxious (UPMC, 2022). In the acceptance stage, the patient gets to internalize reality, live with it, and make it a normal part of life.

Health professional\’s role in teaching the patient at different life stages

During denial, the care professional should educate the patient about the illness and remind them of the required measures. An angry patient needs comfort, education should be soft and full of encouragement (UPMC, 2022). At bargaining, the care provider informs the patient of the best options. Depressed patients also need comfort and encouragement. Once the patient is in acceptance, the health care provider can advise the patient to take medications and accept the situation. Education should focus on adherence.

The role of the family in patient education

Family members’ involvement in patient education is important since they normally contribute to the recovery process. Family members may get to learn ways in which they can promote patients’ adherence to medication (Maslakpak et al., 2018). Family members can provide more information to health care professionals during the sessions. Therefore, their presence during patient education is critical.

Family influence on the compliance of the patient

Family members can influence compliance by reminding the patient to take medications at the right time. Family members can take part in physical activities along with the patient to enhance compliance (Maslakpak et al., 2018). Patients receiving home care rely on family to create a conducive environment to enable them to have effective care. health professionals can have honest, respectable communication with family. They should ensure communication is clear and concise.

Patient education is necessary to improve the quality of health care. Education can help patients address psychosocial challenges. Patients can also identify their personalities through self-perception. Health care providers should always assist patients through the entire process of healing. Family is also important in enhancing patient care.
