Personal Statement

I have been motivated to apply for the NEF Scholarship by my strong desire to acquire competencies that will enable me to advance nursing practice and achieve professional growth. I believe that the NEF Scholarship is an opportunity for me to complete the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program that will equip me with the essential skills and knowledge to use to improve the nursing profession. Caring for people in need has always been a source of fulfillment to me since my childhood years. Although I did not adequately understand how best I could help to address the numerous challenges faced by patients, I still used to spend a lot of time with them just to recognize their unique needs and get to know how best I could help to address them. Completing Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) and Master of Nursing (MSN) in Family Nurse Practitioner programs, and by working for several years as a registered nurse, I have been able to acquire nursing skills and knowledge which I can apply today to improve the lives of patients with both acute and chronic illnesses. I will have my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) degree in December 2022. I will also graduate with my DNP in May of 2022. I believe that the NEF Scholarship will fulfill my curiosity and thirst for knowledge by enabling me to complete my DNP program and achieve my professional goal of improving nursing practice.

My academic qualifications, as well as my nursing experiences, academic objectives, and professional goals make me a suitable candidate to be considered for the NEF Scholarship. I have 16 years of working experience as a registered nurse. I became a registered nurse in 2003 and a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) in 2011. I worked in Primary Care from 2011 to 2015 as a nurse practitioner (NP). I also worked in Orthopedic Surgery from 2015 to 2021 as an NP. I have been working in infectious disease since 2021 to present as an NP. The skills and knowledge that I have acquired during my professional practice with patients have built a strong caring foundation in me and I promise to expand them further when given an opportunity to complete my DNP program under the NEF Scholarship. The scholarship will enable me to fulfill my professional goal of offering care at a more advanced level taking the cultural diversities of patients and nurses into consideration. Besides, I am confident that an opportunity to complete my DNP program under the NEF Scholarship will enable me to meet a number of DNP essentials related to scientific applications in clinical practice, leadership, evidence-based practice, healthcare transformation through health information technology, health care policy, interprofessional collaboration, advanced nursing practice, and population health prevention and improvement. I am confident that I will be able to provide appropriate nursing leadership, engage in nursing research, and select the best treatment options for patients after completing my DNP program under the NEF Scholarship. Studying under the scholarship program will indeed advance my professional nursing knowledge and skills thereby strengthening my professional effectiveness.

I am currently working as a Family Nurse Practitioner (Orthopedic Surgical Specialty) G.V. Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center. I have been working at the same facility since February 2015. Part of my role entails managing the care of patients who suffer from a range of musculoskeletal conditions specifically hips, knees, and shoulders for adult populations. I also conduct physical exams, take detailed patient histories, prescribe tests and treatments, and analyze those tests and treatments among other duties. My goal for completing my DNP program under the NEF Scholarship is to fill my skill and knowledge gaps in various areas including learning to develop individualized care plans, developing meaningful interdisciplinary collaborations with healthcare professionals, leading quality improvement in healthcare organizations, participating in research activities, and taking part in policy creation and implementation to promote healthcare quality and patient safety. Improving my knowledge and skills in these areas through the scholarship program will allow me to make great contributions to the lives of patients and families in need of healthcare services.

Contemporary healthcare organizations are integrating technology into healthcare delivery at a rapid rate. One of the challenges associated with the use of such technologies in health care delivery concerns assuring patients of the privacy and confidentiality of their personal health information. When I am offered the NEF Scholarship to complete my DNP program, I will gain advanced knowledge and skills regarding how to use health information technology to improve healthcare delivery, promote patient safety, and improve the performance of health systems. I will also learn how best I can help health systems to utilize telehealth to provide satisfactory healthcare to patients who cannot visit health facilities in person. Most importantly, I will learn advocacy skills which I intend to apply to improve health systems in a number of health care delivery concepts including technology use.

My career goals, nursing experiences, and academic objectives make me the best candidate to be awarded the NEF Scholarship. The scholarship will enable me to remain relevant not only to the field of nursing but also in the lives of patients and their families. I promise to utilize the opportunity to learn new nursing skills and knowledge and to advance what I already know about caring. I also promise to utilize the opportunity to develop meaningful academic and professional networks and to engage in nursing research to collect evidence to improve nursing practice.
