Personal Framework and Philosophy of Leadership
Today’s nurses need to understand the need for effective nursing leadership in healthcare settings. The application of appropriate leadership styles and theories in nursing leadership and administration is of relevant focus today (Fennell, 2021). It is important for nurses to understand leadership theory and management processes as related to the role of a nurse administrator. Besides, nurses should be able to apply this knowledge in real-life practice in their places of work. According to Segarra and Gentry (2021), experiential learning helps students to internal concepts better and be able to put them to practice. The purpose of this assignment is to use examples to describe personal leadership framework and philosophy.
Leadership and Management
The integration of management and leadership into nursing administration promotes success and enhances team performance. My form of management style is transformational. Transformational leadership is adaptive and motivates by appealing to the higher good. According to Sfantou et al. (2017), leaders who utilize transformational leadership style usually create positive relationships with their followers and implement relevant strategies to motivate employees. As a transformational leader, I lead my team by inspiring confidence in them, showing respect, communicating effectively, and working through a shared vision (Sfantou et al., 2017). For example, I usually inspire my followers to explore their potentials and strengths and do all that they can to realize identified professional goals. Using this approach, I have been able to strengthen staff morale, increase productivity, increase engagement, and enhance job satisfaction among members of my team.
The application of transformational leadership principles into nursing administration has promoted effective management of activities in practice. As Asif et al. (2019) explain, there is a strong relationship between the transformational leadership approach and the implementation of effective management strategies in healthcare organizations. Therefore, the integration of leadership and management in my role as a nurse administrator helps to create a culture of teamwork and patient safety (Asif et al., 2019). For example, through my leadership approach, I am able to promote great nursing expertise among my staff, a factor that has increased staff satisfaction and minimized burnout. Moreover, it is by integrating leadership and management during nursing administration that my unit has been able to record a reduction in mortality rates in the recent past. Generally, integrating leadership and management into nursing administration has helped me to promote staff retention and increase staff experience.
Vision and Mission Statement
The vision and mission of a leader matter a lot for the leader, employees, and the organization. Essentially, a leader who has a mission and vision can offer proper direction to employees and enable them to integrate organizational culture (Steinmann et al., 2018). By clearly defining my leadership mission and vision as a nurse administrator, I have successfully worked with my employees to create a strong nursing workforce and a positive work environment where leaders can comfortably interact with employees. The following are my leadership vision and mission statements.
Vision Statement
“To lead by example by engaging my followers in open communication while also allowing them to share their ideas and opinions. I aspire to develop positive relationships with employees while also guiding them to create goals that will enable them to achieve their full potential.”
Mission Statement
“To apply ethical principles in leadership and make a significant difference in the lives of my team members.”
My mission and vision statements focus on building strong relationships and working with my team members to develop achievable goals. Transformational leaders, through their vision and mission, are able to utilize goal attributes to influence their followers to demonstrate proactive behavior, portray organizational commitment, and achieve job satisfaction (Steinmann et al., 2018). For example, in my role as a nurse administrator, I utilize my mission and vision to elicit a task-oriented spirit among my team members. This helps to induce greater effort, enhance persistence, increase self-efficacy perception, and improve work motivation.
Philosophy and Values
My philosophy and values have positively impacted patient outcomes in my work settings. Ever since I became a nurse, the main thing that I have strived for is to provide patients with compassionate and quality care. When I went into leadership, my philosophy and values were still the same but the focus shifted the way I approached healthcare delivery processes and the manner in which I interact with patients. According to Sfantou et al. (2017), transformational leadership encourages leaders to demonstrate professional characteristics in practice. This empowers them to create a patient safety culture in which employees work hard to ensure that patients achieve positive outcomes. Throughout my professional life as a nurse and as a nurse administrator, I have always wanted to be able to create a positive work environment for those that I worked with. As I strived to build strong relationships with employees, I have been happy to watch as our team gelled together and patient care scores increased. These are some of the practice-related successes that I have been able to achieve by applying my philosophy and values to leadership.
Leadership Style and Preferences
My leadership approach is the transformational leadership style. My preferences of leadership that aligned with this style are influenced by my personality of working with teams to generate positive outcomes for patients. As a transformational leader, I have had the backing and support of the staff that I lead. They trust me and they come to me for advice and guidance. I have always had an open-door policy and encouraged them to bring their ideas to me. When issues arise, we discuss them as a group and work through them. If there is an issue between two individuals, I first try to have them work it out if they can before escalation. Kloutsiniotis et al. (2022) emphasize that a transformational leader should be able to apply effective conflict resolution strategies in order to keep team members united. It is when team members are united that they can work together to provide care that improves patient outcomes.
I value my personality preferences to nursing leadership as they have enabled me to engage in activities that generate positive patient outcomes. From the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment that I completed during the course, I discovered that my 4-letter personality preference as obtained from the MBTI test was INFJ (introverted (I), Intuitive (N), Feeling (F), and Judging(J). INFJ is a personality type that defines people with complex characters and unique types of talents. They focus on developing strong relationships with others and this is perfectly reflected in my transformational leadership style. INFJs select their friends selectively, hold deep convictions, have personal charisma, and strive to protect the oppressed (Humanmetrics Inc., 2022). I am an introvert who obtains energy from the inner world and utilizes them to interact with people. I am also an intuitive person who sees the inner picture and applies critical thinking to establish interconnectedness among things. I have a preference for feeling, which means I evaluate the impacts of my actions on others when making decisions. Again, I judge carefully when organizing my life which enables me to have clear structures and schedule to ensure that I complete projects within the available time (Humanmetrics Inc., 2022). Generally, as an INFJ, I am both a dreamer and a doer both in my roles as a nurse and as a nurse administrator.
Life-Long Learning
Life-long learning is an integral component of philosophies of leadership. Essentially, life-long learning enables nurses to acquire advanced skills and knowledge that help them to enhance their leadership effectiveness (Mlambo et al., 2021). Lifelong learning is essential to becoming a good leader. I do not believe that you can be an effective or efficient leader if you are not dedicated to life long learning. The field of medicine is constantly evolving and as leaders, one must stay up to date on all the new technology and medical treatments out to be able to effectively train those under her/him (Booth et al., 2021). For example, I am finishing up my Master’s in Nursing Administration. Our organization also has multiple classes for management to take to help us to better ourselves and to help us to stay current on new things. This is something that I plan to take advantage of in order to improve my leadership effectiveness.
Conclusion
The ability to apply personal framework and philosophy is a vital competency that today’s nurse leaders and administrators should possess. This enables nurse leaders to identify their strengths that they need to explore and weaknesses that they need to improve. Generally, life-long learning enables nurses to acquire advanced skills and knowledge that help them to enhance their leadership philosophies and effectiveness.
