Locating articles to support evidence-based practice begins with a database search. The article by Kumar et al. (2020) was obtained after searching the Walden University Library. The area of focus addressed in the article is psychiatric mental health nursing practice. As reported by the authors, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners have a role to play in ensuring that children and adolescents get access to quality mental health care services.
`Searching a database can be a daunting task, especially for students who have never used the tool before. The major difficulty that was faced when searching Walden University Library to locate the article above was having to select the article from a pool of resources that were generated during the initial search. However, the article was obtained after refining the search using Boolean Operators (Bramer et al., 2018; Khurshid et al., 2021). The keywords used to refine the search include psychiatric nursing practice and psychiatric nurse practitioners with a focus on articles published between 2019 and 2022. Generally, the Walden University Library database would be useful to colleagues. The reason is that it is user-friendly and contains a large volume of resources to choose from. The database would be recommended for students because it is a good source of peer-reviewed articles for different specialties.

Graduate studies require the ability to write on a scholarly level. This course has helped me build the foundations on how to write in proper APA format, utilizing the library to find scholarly research material, and putting it all down on paper to get my ideas across to my audience. How can one choose the proper research material and then critically think and form one’s ideas? One way is through a process called synthesis. “Synthesis requires decision making, analysis, evaluation, and creation of new material, all rather high levels of thinking. These are skills that people use every day in nursing practice and probably do not even think about it” (Shellenbarger, 2016, para. 2). Additionally, with many resources, it can be challenging to determine how to begin or which resources to choose in order to succeed in your academic journey. The first steps start with choosing the correct piece of research that can deliver enough evidence that aligns with the research question you are trying to answer or deliver to the audience.
Explaining Difficulties While searching for Article
Utilizing the Walden library is an essential resource to my success. Walden library is a source that will save me time and allows me to get quality material for free, rather than choosing a search engine like Google. I chose the article from the Walden Library database titled Addressing the shortage of Geriatricians: What medical educators can learn from the nurse practitioner Training Model (Golden et al., 2015). I faced some difficulties finding research on the field of study I am currently pursuing which is Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. Database A-Z was the first place I looked. At first, I searched the library in general and did not find much relevant material. Taking a closer look, I narrowed the search subject study to nursing, which helped yield better results. However, it was not enough because I was looking for peer-reviewed material; thus, I refined my search and selected peer-reviewed. As a graduate nursing student, it is crucial to utilize peer-reviewed material because it subjects the material to be reviewed by other experts in the same field, ensuring the material quality is academic and relative. Additionally, I used a broad word while searching and realized I was getting unfavorable outcomes. Selecting keywords on the subject matter allowed me to find more specific material faster. Another great tip is selecting all results for publication type and all providers in the database search section, yielding more research material.
Why the Database is Helpful
Database A-Z is helpful, and I would highly recommend it to my colleagues because it is the public database that houses several subscription sources in one place for Walden University (Walden University, n.d.). The database allows you to research by subject, publication type such as books, journals, articles, peer-reviewed, etc., and specific databases. Upon navigating the Walden library, I selected different options and found Google Scholar. I found it challenging to use the Google Scholar database because I was not able to refine my search or verify if the material was peer-reviewed or not. Additionally, some of the selected sources asked for a purchase, limiting my access to full pdf text. Lastly, it was challenging to search more precisely by using keywords. Alternatively, Ulrich does not have articles or journals but can verify if the article or journal you find is peer-reviewed. According to (Walden University n.d.), it is important to utilize multiple databases to avoid missing any information or material that can help you find what you are looking for. A prime example is to use alternative places to look for the same data. A topic on nursing would be found by searching health sciences, education, and possibly business. The databases help to narrow down the type of material you might be seeking, such as a book, newspaper or peer reviewed. Lastly, Thoreau is a tool that allows most of the Walden library database, which can be a great point to begin when navigating your search (Walden University n.d.)
