Locating articles to support evidence-based practice begins with a database search. The article by Balestra (2018) was obtained after searching the ScienceDirect database. The article is also available in the Walden library. The area of focus addressed in the article is psychiatric mental health nursing practice. As reported by the author, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners have a role to play in ensuring that patients get access to quality mental health care services. Balestra (2018) further asserts that the role of Psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioners is increasing as this group of professionals gains more importance because they are taking up the roles of psychiatrists and physicians trained in basic psychiatric services. They have been pushed to step in for these professionals because their numbers continue to decrease as the number of mental health patients increases. This shift is associated with litigation and licensing issues that these nurses must be privy to before they adopt this new practice.

Part 3: Research Analysis
Step 1: I have identified one topic of interest for further study. I have researched and identified one peer-reviewed research article focused on this topic and have analyzed this article. The results of these efforts are shared below.
The topic of Interest: | Psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioners
Research Article: Include full citation in APA format, as well as link or search details (such as DOI) | Balestra, M. L. (2018). Liability risks for psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners. The Journal for Nurse Practitioners, 14(9), 671-676. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.nurpra.2018.08.005
Professional Practice Use:
One or more professional practice uses the theories/concepts presented in the article |
Psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioners can use this article to maneuver the complex legal requirements associated with taking up bigger responsibilities in handling mental health that should otherwise be undertaken by psychiatrists and relevant physicians.

Gathering evidence from various studies helps in making informed conclusions and recommendations (Lame, 2019) | Lack of obvious bias since the author only selected the evidence that proved his argument despite the presence of otherwise opinions (Theofanidis & Fountouki, 2018). | The article speaks widely about widening the scope of practice of Psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioners and the challenges involved (Balestra, 2018). | This article provides a strong justification for this research study. |
Step 2: Summary of Analysis
Finding an appropriate article to use in a research study is complex and challenging. The approach I used in identifying this article was to specifically identify the keywords for the study and directly search them in an appropriate database. In this case, the keywords were Psychiatric/mental health nursing and mental health nurse practitioners while the database was the Walden library. This search generated many articles. I went through their titles, read and internalized them, and picked the ones I considered most suitable. I then read the abstracts of the selected article to eliminate other articles and remained with one.
To find the most effective articles, one should identify the keywords first as part of the inclusion and exclusion criteria (Khurshid et al., 2021). Identify other exclusion criteria such as the date (years) to be considered and location. Pick the database you want to search in and set all these criteria while searching the keywords (Jesus & Lima, 2020). Some of the databases one can consider are the Walden library, ScienceDirect, NCBI/PubMed, and Google Scholar (Theofanidis & Fountouki, 2018).
