Please do a paragraph about this post with this instruction .
post most have 4 or more sentences .
you also have to have a high quality post from a content perspective. This means it also needs to do more than agree with or praise a class mate. If you agree with a classmate, explain why, give an example, share what you learned in the readings
Nursing research is defined as “a scientific process that validates and refines existing knowledge and generates new knowledge that directly and indirectly influences nursing practice†(Grove, Gray & Burns, 2015, p. 3.). Evidenced-based practice (EBP) is defined as the integration of the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture and preferences (American Psychological Association, 2016).
Nurses utilizes the findings from research to provide evidence-based care or interventions in their practice to develop quality and positive patient outcomes. The skills and knowledge of nursing research and EBP helps healthcare providers in provision of care that is cost-effective and safe. This results in good patient outcomes and health promotion of individuals, families and communities as a whole.
An example of nursing research that has improved patient outcome is the “research on catheter-associated urinary tract infectionsâ€. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) “continue to account for most hospital-acquired infections; yet records for up to 50% of hospitalized patients who received an indwelling catheter lack documentation of evidence-based criterion for the insertion decision†(Welden, 2013, para. 1.). Indwelling catheter insertion increases bacterial colonization and puts the patient at risk of developing an infection. Indwelling catheters were used on patients even when it was not necessarily needed and there weren’t appropriate documentations on the part of the healthcare providers on the length of catheter insertions. Patients developed urinary tract infections while being hospitalized. “A CAUTI is a common HAI (Hospital-Acquired Infection), one that involves patient discomfort, fever, increased length of stay, increased costs, and other adverse effects. Thus, when a CAUTI occurs, and there is no documentation of the rationale for the catheter use or its duration, it is no longer assumed that appropriate care was provided†(Welden, 2013, para. 4.). The nursing research on CAUTI focused on reducing CAUTI by minimizing the initiation of indwelling catheters and decreasing the length of usage. This has helped in decreasing the rate of infections in patients that were hospitalized.
Another example of nursing research that has improved patient outcome is “research on hand hygieneâ€. Healthcare providers were notably non-compliant in practicing hand hygiene in various work settings. Nursing research showed that poor hand hygiene practices was the easiest and most common way to transmit germs from place-to place and person-to-person. Nursing research invented the use of alcohol hand sanitizers that kills 99% of germs in the hands and urged healthcare providers to use this when hands are not visibly soiled and before and after each patient contact. This has helped in preventing further transmission/spread of germs.
In my practice today, these evidenced-based practices have helped in a tremendous way in promoting better and positive patient outcomes. Hand hygiene is always performed according to my facilities policies and procedures. Also, there are facility guidelines that must be followed by doctors and nurses on indwelling catheter usage and its documentation.
