In the prior paper, we concluded that research is more important than EBP, because without research there is no EBP. Now we need to respond to a student that believes EBP is more important than research. The response requires a minimum of 250 words.

\”Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) and research all play an essential role in nursing practice; however, I believe EBP is more important than research. Gray & Grove (2021) asserts that Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) relies on the nurse’s clinical experience, patients’ needs, and formal evidence. The authors acknowledge that EBP utilizes a substantial body of knowledge gained from practice and has proven to be result oriented. This knowledge is crucial as it allows for an understanding of human responses to interventions based on methods that have been proven in the past (Youngblut & Brooten, 2001). For example, nurses may have noted that patients who are tuned every two hours have a lower incidence of developing pressure ulcers; this knowledge is based on knowledge from past clinical practice that has proven to be effective and, if put into practice, will promote quality outcomes for patients.
While nursing research is essential, Boswell & Cannon (2020) argue that nursing research focuses on generating new knowledge or validating existing knowledge. The authors state that research results are valid and reliable when researchers utilize the scientific method. This is in contrast to EVB, which, as stated earlier, employs knowledge gained from clinical experience. This information shows that a nurse is able to incorporate the best data available to make the best patient care decisions based on proven results; while on the other hand, Boswell & Cannon (2020) presume nurses may have difficulty interpreting and evaluating published research making it difficult to apply.

The purpose of this discussion was to determine the most important process between evidence-based practice (EBP) and research. Evidence-based practice and research are today recognized widely to bear the core of improving health and quality of healthcare (Boswell & Cannon, 2022). The student provided a perspective that evidence-based practice (EBP) is more important than research. The student is therefore persuaded to consider another viewpoint. The very first thing to admit before moving forward into the comparison is the fact that both evidence-based practice and research have significant importance in improving health and healthcare delivery.
Both evidence-based practice and research have a significant role to play in healthcare to improve the processes of healthcare delivery, the quality of healthcare, and the prevention of illnesses (LoBiondo-Wood et al., 2018). While research involves gathering or collecting evidence through scientific and systematic inquiry to test hypotheses or to answer particular questions through the use of rigorous and disciplined methods, evidence-based practice integrates the best available research evidence, patient values, and clinical expertise into clinical practice to enhance positive patient outcomes. Even by just looking at the definition, it is evident that both the issues are important. Evidence-based practice requires research to provide evidence (LoBiondo-Wood et al., 2018). On the other hand, research requires evidence-based practice to translate research evidence into clinical practice
Another thing worth noting is that the primary aim of conducting research is to either validate existing evidence or generate new evidence based on a particular theory. In that regard, research generates new evidence, as opposed to evidence-based practice (Boswell & Cannon, 2022). The primary aim of evidence-based practice is to translate evidence into practice to enhance the effectiveness of treatment. Therefore, evidence-based practice is entirely dependent on the scientific evidence produced through research (Boswell & Cannon, 2022). Evidence-based practice takes the help of research to gain identify the evidence.
In a nutshell, research generates evidence, which is then translated into clinical practice through evidence-based practice. Without research, experts cannot find or discover new knowledge, which means there will be no new evidence to translate into evidence-based practice (LoBiondo-Wood et al., 2018). An example of a research study may involve investigating the effectiveness of forgiveness therapy in promoting the psychological well-being of women who are emotionally abused by their spouses (LoBiondo-Wood et al., 2018). If forgiveness therapy proves to be effective, it can be an evidence-based practice to treat individuals. The main argument here is that evidence-based practice cannot happen without research evidence while research can exist without EBP. Therefore, one would easily conclude that research is more important than EBP (LoBiondo-Wood et al., 2018). But it is important to understand that both EBP and research have a significant impact on the quality of healthcare provided.
