New Practice Approaches

This week’s practicum experience seeks to understand new practice approaches in healthcare. The practicum setting is a large hospital offering different services to improve care. The setting has implemented several new practice approaches to medical/nursing care services, as well as, management practices (Tuckson et al., 2017). During the practicum experience, I got the opportunity to discuss new practice approaches in healthcare together with my mentor and colleagues. Some of the new practices setting into healthcare setting include telehealth, which helps patients attend health appointments in the comfort of their homes (Tuckson et al., 2017). Telehealth is a new achievement that the facility is experiencing. The management plans to extend this practice to all departments to improve accessibility and reduce the costs associated with appointments and follow-ups.

Furthermore, the healthcare setting implemented lean management in the emergency department. The emergency department faces problems with overcrowding, access block, cost containment, and increasing demand from patients. The lean management approach was employed to try to solve these problems (Moldovan, 2018). The lean process improvement project led to about a 30% increase in the service capacity to admit new patients as well as a 15% reduction in the no-show rate due to the transformation of the service process. The application of concepts borrowed from Lean thinking such as streaming patients into groups cared for by a specific team of nurses and physicians, as well as minimizing complex queues in the emergency department enhanced flow, hence reducing the potential for overcrowding (Moldovan, 2018). These new approaches had a significant influence on the efficiency and effectiveness of provided care within the setting.
