Narrative Analysis Paper
Through reflective analysis, nursing students are able to examine their actions and experiences throughout an academic program thereby enabling them to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses in relation to clearly outlined course outcomes. Reflective practice promotes critical thinking, enhances reasoning, and encourages learning (Koshy et al., 2017). The purpose of this narrative analysis paper is to reflect how the 15 classes and different assignments completed in the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program enabled the student to meet the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)/FNP Program Outcomes. The student will further evaluate how the program promoted professional growth and development in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains of learning as it pertains to the FNP Program. The analysis will also include a reflection on how the program promoted professional growth and development as it pertains to the AACN’s MSN Essentials for Graduate Education, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Competencies, and how the student’s cultural competence has been transformed after the completion of the FNP program.

The Cognitive, Psychomotor, and Affective Domains of Learning
I have attained professional growth and development in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains of learning after completing all the 15 classes in the course and their associated assignments. As Dubrowski et al. (2021) explain, a well-developed educational program should facilitate learning in the cognitive (thinking), psychomotor (kinesthetic or physical), and affective (feelings or emotions) domains. The varied teaching approaches used by my instructors and preceptors during the course have changed my ways of thinking, my physical reactions toward patients, and my emotions or feelings when I am interacting with patients and families.
I must admit that I have acquired new knowledge and skills in all six categories of the cognitive domain of learning. These categories include; “knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation (Dubrowski et al., 2021, p. e14055).” For example, I can remember the conceptual foundations and skills essential for the master’s-prepared nurse and their usefulness in the advanced practice role. I can also describe the importance of nursing informatics in promoting the proper handling of patients’ data in contemporary healthcare settings. Again, I can apply various nursing theories to direct healthcare delivery when providing care to patients and families with varied healthcare needs. I am now in a position to synthesize how healthcare policy and leadership impact family nursing practice. Furthermore, I can evaluate the impacts of holistic and person-centered care on patient outcomes. Generally, the FNP program has greatly improved my intellectual skills and abilities.
Completing the FNP program and its associated assignments has enabled me to grow professionally and develop as a graduate student in the psychomotor domain of learning. According to Dubrowski et al. (2021), the psychomotor domain of learning addresses coordination and motor skills and it involves the ability to perceive, make complex overt responses, originate ideas, and adapt to situations. For example, after completing course requirements, I am now able to detect when a patient is feeling pain. I can follow evidence-based guidelines and standard operating procedures to treat patients with different types of illnesses. I can also organize a caring environment in readiness to address a patient’s needs. Additionally, I am in a position to build strong networks with members of interdisciplinary teams to address complex patients’ problems. I can also adapt easily to new practice environments including nursing homes where most patients are usually found. Another important learning area under the psychomotor domain of learning is my ability to originate new practice approaches from published literature to address patients’ problems (Dubrowski et al., 2021). Through practice, I have been able to advance my psychomotor skills and I believe that I will be able to perform even more complex tasks in the near future.
The manner in which I approach things emotionally has improved greatly and this signifies that I have developed and grown professionally in the affective domain of learning. According to Dubrowski et al. (2021), the affective domain addresses the emotional, feelings, and attitudes aspects of learning. As a graduate FNP student, I can now listen carefully to my patients in order to understand their needs at the individual level. I can participate in discussions with my colleagues in order to adequately understand clinical practice issues that surround the care of both aged and non-aged families. I now appreciate the uniqueness of every patient and approach my clients with respect, while also valuing their ideas, in order to build strong therapeutic relationships with them. My organization skills have significantly improved as I am able to compare the effectiveness of nursing interventions on patients and prioritize the best ones to use to improve health outcomes. As a graduate student, I can influence my colleagues, using evidence, to use certain interventions to resolve complex clinical practice issues (Dubrowski et al., 2021). Generally, learning in the affective domain motivates me to approach nursing care with a lot of enthusiasm.
AACN’s MSN Essentials for Graduate Education
As I complete the FNP Program, I am confident that I have achieved professional growth and development as it relates to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing. The AACN expects graduate nurses to demonstrate knowledge acquisition in IX essential areas to prove that they can approach nursing at a more advanced level than before they completed a graduate program (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011). These areas encompass evidence-based practice, leadership, quality, safety, health informatics, health policy, interprofessional collaboration, clinical prevention, and advanced nursing practice.
I have grown in all nine essential areas as demonstrated by the manner in which I approach nursing practice today. For example, in regards to Essential I, I can integrate scientific findings from nursing and other areas of health to improve clinical practice and nursing care. As it pertains to essential II, I am in a position to lead the creation of an organizational setting that promotes ethical decision-making and enhances the delivery of safe and quality patient care. My professional growth and development in Essential III are demonstrated in my ability to apply clinical practice principles and standards to support the delivery of quality patient care. The fact that I can utilize research outcomes to resolve clinical practice problems and influence change within the practice setting signifies that I have met Essential IV of Master’s Education in Nursing. I have grown and developed as a graduate student as it pertains to Essential V due to my increased ability to utilize patient-care technologies such as telehealth, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, to enhance communication and deliver coordinated care (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011).
The FNP program has improved my knowledge and skills in several other areas including health advocacy, interprofessional collaboration, clinical prevention, and advanced level of practice. As an FNP graduate, I have met Essential VI by being able to participate in policy creation and development processes to influence patient care and clinical practice (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011). As I continue to be part of and lead professional teams in nursing to support the improvement of both patient and population outcomes, I am confident that completing the FNP program has enabled me to meet Essential VII of Master’s Education in Nursing. I have achieved professional growth and development in regards to Essentials VIII and IX by being able to apply person-centered and clinically-appropriate concepts to improve the health of families and populations and by implementing Master’s level nursing practice interventions that influence the health outcome of individuals, families, and populations respectively (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011). I am confident as an FNP graduate that I possess essential competencies that will enable me to perform at an advanced nursing practice level.
The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Competencies
I must admit that I have attained professional growth and development regarding NONPF Competencies. Nursing graduates must demonstrate that they have acquired knowledge and skills in relation to a number of nurse practitioner core competencies as defined by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2017). As an FNP graduate, I can; utilize evidence-based standards to improve patient care (scientific foundation competencies), assume complex leadership roles to influence change within healthcare settings (leadership competencies), apply evidence-based practice to improve healthcare quality (quality competencies), and participate in nursing research to generate new knowledge (practice inquiry competencies) (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2017). These competencies enable me to perform advanced levels of family nursing practice today.
The FNP program has enabled me to acquire competencies in other areas including health technology, health delivery systems, health policy, ethics, and independent practice. As the program comes to completion, I am in a position to integrate technology such as electronic health records and telehealth into the healthcare delivery process to improve patient outcomes (technology and information literacy competencies) (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2017). I can also advocate for the development and implementation of health policies that promote safe and quality nursing practice (policy competencies). Due to my increased ability to apply organizational practice knowledge to improve healthcare delivery in complex systems, I can demonstrate that I possess relevant competencies in relation to health delivery systems (health delivery system competencies). I can integrate ethical principles and theories into clinical decision-making when working with patients (ethics competencies). I am also in a position to function as an independent nurse practitioner licensed to manage illnesses of individual patients, families, and populations (independent practice competencies) (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2017). I will apply the NONPF competencies acquired thus far to improve family nursing practice and improve patient outcomes.
Cultural Competence
The FNP program and the assignments completed during the course have transformed my cultural competence as demonstrated by my actions toward patients, families, populations, and colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2021) define cultural competence in health as a set of behaviors and attitudes demonstrated by healthcare professionals to promote effective working practice in cross-cultural situations where people from diverse cultural backgrounds interact. As an FNP graduate, I appreciate cultural diversity among my clients, both in the hospital and in the community. I have learned to integrate patients’ values, perceptions, and beliefs into healthcare delivery (Jasemi et al., 2017). I provide holistic care to my clients by practicing inclusivity, utilizing appropriate language, and avoiding the use of stereotyping words whenever I am working with patients. I act as a role model to my colleagues and patients by not discriminating against anyone during care (Jasemi et al., 2017). My transformed cultural competence plays a crucial role in advancing my clinical practice abilities and in strengthening my therapeutic relationships with patients.
Conclusion
The15 classes in my FNP program and their associated assignments have greatly improved my knowledge, skills, and competencies in numerous areas related to nursing practice. Precisely, by completing the FNP program, I have achieved professional growth and development as a graduate student in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains of learning. I have also grown and developed professionally as it pertains to AACN’s MSN Essentials for Graduate Education and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Competencies. I am also motivated that the program has positively transformed my own cultural competence. I intend to apply the knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired in the FNP program to advance clinical practice and improve healthcare delivery when providing nursing care to individuals, families, and populations.
