MSN Generalist Paper

Introduction

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs allow registered nurses (RNs) to advance their careers in different nursing specializations. MSN program teaches nurses new knowledge through administrative, advanced clinical training, and educational areas of nursing (Rogers, 2021). Many nurses lack understanding of the difference between MSN and DNP degree programs. Therefore, it is important to educate them to enhance their desire for an advanced level of nursing education. This paper answers all the questions to complete this assignment.

Three definitions of advanced nursing practice (ANP) are proposed in Hamric (2019) Chapter 3[AP1]

First definition:  advanced nursing practice is the integration and application of a broad range of theoretical and evidence-based knowledge that occurs as part of graduate nursing education (Tracy & O’Grady, 2019). Second definition: “any form of nursing intervention that influences health care outcomes for individuals or populations, including the direct care of individual patients, management of care for individuals and populations, administration of nursing and health care organizations, and the development and implementation of health policy” (Tracy & O’Grady, 2019). Third definition: a doctoral-level educational preparation for individuals at the most advanced level of nursing practice. These three definitions are more or less the same. The first definition does not clarify the clinically-focused nature of ANP. The second definition is broader and more elaborate than the other two definitions.

In what respects do they agree? Disagree?

All the three definitions agree on one thing; advanced nursing practice is achieved by attaining a DNP degree. They also agree that advanced nursing practice is the highest level of nursing education and that it goes beyond clinical practice. One area they disagree with is the full role of a DNP-prepared nurse (Tracy & O’Grady, 2019). For instance, the third definition only states that it is doctoral-level educational preparation for individuals at the most advanced level of nursing practice. however, it does not clearly define the clinical roles of the professionals.

Which offers the most helpful definition in your view? Support your answer

The second definition provides a convincing definition. It states: “any form of nursing intervention that influences health care outcomes for individuals or populations, including the direct care of individual patients, management of care for individuals and populations, administration of nursing and health care organizations, and the development and implementation of health policy” (Tracy & O’Grady, 2019). It is very broad and elaborate than the first and the third definition.

Distinctions made between Advanced Nursing Practice and Advanced Practice Nursing

Advanced nursing practice is achieved through the attainment of a DNP degree, it is the highest level of nursing education. However, advanced practice nursing is achieved by attaining an MSN degree. Also, advanced practice nursing expands clinical skills and abilities (Tracy & O’Grady, 2019). However, the advanced nursing practice provides nurses with roles beyond clinical practice, such as administrative and educative roles. The current confusion in the US has a worldwide implication because the global community prefers advanced nursing practice when talking about direct care roles that are comparable to US APRN roles (Tracy & O’Grady, 2019). Understanding the difference is important to ensure nurses stay within their scope of practice.

Locate a definition of advanced practice nursing in your specialty

Generally, advanced practice nursing is defined as “The performance of additional acts by registered nurses who have gained added knowledge and skills through post-basic education and clinical experience” (Tracy & O’Grady, 2019). Based on the specialty, it can be defined as a nurse who has completed an accredited graduate-level education program preparing him or her for the role of a certified nurse practitioner.

Conclusion

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree are both important in healthcare. They both have similarities and differences. There are various definitions of advanced nursing practice as seen above. This paper answered all the questions to complete the assignment.
