- Mission of the agency/organization
The organization’s mission is “To provide high quality, cost-effective healthcare that delivers the best value to the people we serve in a spiritual environment of caring in association with internationally recognized teaching and research.” (Houston Methodist, 2022).
3.Who they serve
The hospital is a Christian organization that was founded by the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. It provides care to all patients both local and international patients. The hospital has six centers of excellence, which deliver quality and safe care in areas of digestive disorders, cancer, heart and vascular disease, orthopedics and sports medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, and transplant. Houston Methodist hospital seeks to serve all patients as sacred individuals who have value ad worth. The organization’s values include integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence.
- How long have they been in existence
The hospital has been in existence for 103 years. It was established in 1919.
- How they are funded
Donors fund the hospital, while other sources of revenue include money paid as medical bills by the patients. The hospital requires that the patients pay their bills on time while at the same time offering the needy patients financial assistance.
- The impact they have on their patients or families
The Houston Methodist Hospital has a huge impact on the patients and their families through the provision of quality and safe patient care. The hospital’s values enable the staff to treat the patients with dignity and the value that they are worthy. Besides the provision of health care, the organization provides financial assistance through its financial assistance collections and payment plan policies. The policies allow the organization to assist patients that are uninsured or underinsured, those that are unable to pay for the necessary care such as emergency care, as well as those who are ineligible for a government program (Houston Methodist, 2022).
Moreover, the organization provides inclusive spiritual care for the patients and their families, which is delivered with dignity, compassion, and respect for human faith. According to Harrad et al. (2019), spiritual care is part of holistic care, which promotes the patients’ tolerance of the physical and emotional demands of their illnesses. The chaplains in the organization provide a listening ear, pray for the patient before medical procedures, and support the family, and friends while at the same time providing a connection to a patient’s faith tradition. When patients achieve spiritual well-being, they tend to manage stress and negative emotions better.
- The type of staff they employ and their credentials
The director of case management and social services at Methodist Hospital in Houston Texas has 30 registered nurses, case managers, and licensed master social workers who report to her. Registered nurses usually have an associate degree in nursing or a bachelor of science in nursing. They are trained and are responsible for assessing patients’ problems; they provide care to the sick, maintain patient records, implement care plans, and educate patients among others. Case managers usually have a four-year-old bachelor’s degree program and are responsible for coordinating with social services to align care or make changes with the care plans, finding appropriate teams to manage patients’ needs, assessing patients for necessary care, and even coordinating with the patient’s family and friends. Licensed social workers usually have a master of Social Work Degree, which provides extensive training and preparation in social work. Social workers assist patients to handle daily life problems, especially whose issues are caused by abuse, neglect, mental health, or substance abuse.
- The kind of career path a person who recently graduated might have at the agency
A person that recently graduated could choose to have a career path leading to social work, leadership, physician, and nurse practitioner based on the education and practice training opportunities. For example, the organization offers Houston Methodist a CCNE accredited Nurse Residency Program that takes the newly baccalaureate-prepared nurses beyond their formal education. The program cultivates and nurtures their leadership abilities as well as professional development.
- Social policies or laws that impact the agency\’s work
Some of the social policies that impact the organization’s work include unemployment insurance, health insurance, food assistance, education, and childcare assistance. The health-based organization should look at issues related to health insurance. It should provide financial assistance to individuals that do not have health assurance or those who are not eligible for government-sponsored health insurance. Similarly, through the social workers, the organization should provide care and assistance to individuals facing different issues such as the lack of food, parental neglect, physical abuse, or even substance abuse.
