Discussion: From Data to Knowledge to Evidence-Based Practice
In a previous course, you considered concepts of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom—that is, you sought meaning in data and how to apply knowledge about the data. Now, in this Discussion, consider how identifying gaps in practice, along with theory, models, and evidence-based practice can lead to greater wisdom in the data, information, knowledge, and wisdom framework.
To Prepare
Review concepts of evidence-based practice in correlation to data collection and knowledge.
Consider how this learned knowledge, along with theoretical models, can now be put into nursing practice to create safe and quality healthcare services and information.
Post an explanation of how theoretical models and the concepts of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom relate to evidence-based practice in nursing. Be specific and provide examples.

From Data to Knowledge to Evidence-Based Practice
Evidence-based practice involves the use of available research evidence and data from expert opinions and patient values to improve health, safety, and patient outcomes. Theoretical models and the concepts of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom are related to evidence-based practice in one way or the other (Nelson, 2018). Theoretical models allow experts to understand a problem or an issue, hence, allowing the individuals to make proper decisions. Nursing theory provides a framework for nursing interventions (Younas & Quennell, 2019). The theoretical model also guides the formation and implementation of evidence-based practice in nursing care.
The concepts of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom (DIKW) are all part and parcel of evidence-based practice. The concept of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom is a framework for understanding clinical information systems and their influence on healthcare (Nelson, 2018). The DIKW model has played an important role in the development of nursing informatics and is widely applicable in practice. For instance, the DIKW model involves the collection of patient data regarding vital signs (Aukett, 2019). Once the data is collected, the information is written down on paper then knowledge enables the caregiver to interpret the data by identifying the abnormal and the normal signs. Wisdom allows the nurse to implement a proper nursing intervention. The proper intervention is the evidence-based practice that is appropriate for the context. Evidence-based practice is usually guided by data from either research or expert opinions or patient values (Chien, 2019). Therefore, theoretical models and the DIKW model are both tied to evidence-based practice.
