The challenges of making psychiatric diagnoses include asking questions that will accurately map the patient’s case towards a specific diagnosis, partial assessment or view of symptoms, misdiagnosis, and cognitive bias that may make clinicians attribute the patients’ symptoms or life story to a specific disorder. Rosenhan (1973) illustrated in her article that mental health professionals often make errors and can easily diagnose sane patients as insane. For instance, the pseudo-patients in the study were diagnosed with illnesses such as schizophrenia based on the symptoms they claimed to have and no further evaluation was conducted to assess their mental state even when they acted sanely. Frances recommends different strategies that can help make more accurate diagnoses such as watchful waiting and assessing the persistence and severity of symptoms. If such strategies were used by the mental health professionals in the study described by Rosenhan (1973), the pseudo-patients would have been easily identified.

As per Anakwenze and Zuberi (2013), rapid urbanization is a significant threat to mental health since urban poverty increases the risk of developing mental disorders which in turn reinforces poverty. Policy makers and social workers must collaborate to develop a comprehensive system that focuses on prevention. When working with people living in poverty in urban areas, social workers should follow three ethical principles: social justice, competence, and respecting the worth and dignity of a person. National Association of Social Workers (2017) describes social justice as a principle that entails pursuing social change by focusing on social issues such as poverty. Competence entails enhancing professional skills and knowledge, while respecting the dignity of a person entails treating people respectfully regardless of their culture or social status. These principles are necessary when working with people living in poverty since they are vulnerable and endure complex issues which must be handled by competent social workers.
