Ethical and Spiritual Perspectives Health Care
Explain the Christian perspective of the nature of spirituality and ethics in contrast to the perspective of postmodern relativism within health care.
Christian perspective of spirituality and ethics is strict and structured toward one direction, which is to do everything as pleased by God. Christians believe that God exists as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Zavada, 2019). The Trinity is then believed to operate as one. God is the creator and sustainer of life, the Earth, and everything present on Earth. God gives everything including knowledge and wisdom. Therefore, every life decision must resonate with what God wants. For instance, since God is the giver of life, the decision of Christianity is against any decision to end life (including abortion) whatsoever (Alexander, 2019). In healthcare Christian perspective of spirituality and ethics is practiced when nurses treat patients with respect, love, and dignity.
The perspective of postmodern relativism, on the other hand, contrasts with the Christian worldview of spirituality and ethics. Postmodern relativism is opposed to Christianity because it rejects any constant, definite, and universal belief and instead, considers knowledge to be relative, local, and fully influenced by special cultures and values (Zavada, 2019). In healthcare, rather than believing that all decisions should please God, postmodern relativism believes that circumstances influence ethical decisions (Zavada, 2019). For instance, abortion or end life can be ethical in certain situations. There are many cultures and religions across the world that Christianity does not consider in its principles and beliefs (Zavada, 2019). The postmodern relativism perspective is useful to health care because it supports multicultural care delivery by accepting diversity. However, both perspectives play important role in health care.
