- What are three elderly abuse interventions according to Shelly Jackson, and when are these interventions appropriate to implement?
The main interventions for elderly abuse include conducting a needs assessment to identify the needs of the elderly person, a multidisciplinary approach that includes both legal intervention and material support, and provision of support to caregivers. Needs assessment helps determine whether older adults need institutional placement, home help, hospitalization, or urgent medication to improve their quality of life. When these needs are identified, the next step is to connect them to support services within the community. The multidisciplinary approach also includes reporting cases of abuse to appropriate authorities. Legal intervention reduces the risk of further mistreatment. In such cases, human service professionals such as social workers work with lawyers to evaluate the case and determine support interventions such as counseling and support groups that may benefit the elderly. It is also important to help caregivers develop the necessary coping skills required to deal with challenges associated with caregiving. This intervention reduces the risk of elderly abuse (Jackson, 2014).
- What are three general sets of ethical issues that need to be faced when considering matters of death and dying according to Wienclaw (2015)? Note: The actual year in the link says 2021. “Ethical Issues of Death and Dying,” by Wienclaw, from Research Starters: Sociology (2015)
Ethics is generally concerned with what is regarded as right or wrong. However, it is important to note that ethical practices, especially those associated with death and dying, vary from one culture to another. The three general sets of ethical issues as described by Wienclaw (2015) include a definition of life and death, determination of the quality of life based on individual experiences, and deciding on how to treat the body after death. Ethical behavior surrounding death and dying is mostly based on religious beliefs. For instance, some people may believe that upon death, cremation is the right way of handling the body while others may believe that burial is the right way. Regardless of how such decisions are informed, it is important to approach the issues of death and dying when the person in question is still alive, mentally stable, and able to communicate their exact wishes to ensure that family members know which decisions to make and how to prepare for the loss.

From the article by Psychology (2016), a psychological disorder that resonated with me is depression. The elderly may experience severe depression that may impair their daily functioning and increase the risk of suicide. Depression resonates with me because it is a significant issue that can easily be ignored. The type of counseling that resonates with me is group counseling. When the elderly interact with their peers, they improve their social lives and develop better-coping skills for dealing with issues such as anxiety and depression. Groups also provide the elderly with the support system they need to deal with physical and cognitive issues associated with aging. For adaptation to the counseling process, I feel that considering the physical issues associated with aging such as difficulty hearing and making appropriate provisions is very important. For instance, when counselors work with elderly clients with hearing difficulties, they should speak louder, more slowly, and use a deeper voice to ensure that clients understand them.
