DQ 13-1: Theories/Models and Frameworks
Quality improvement projects in healthcare organizations are implemented to improve patient outcomes. Interventions that cause the desired improvements in patient outcomes are usually incorporated into the standard operating procedures to bring about lasting change in practice and healthcare quality (Arabi et al., 2022; Institute for Healthcare Improvement, 2022). Using quality improvement frameworks and change management theories/models can help nursing students establish whether their projects are causing improvement in patient outcomes and successfully integrate change into practice respectively.
The project team will use Kurt Lewin’s change theory or model and the Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) framework to direct clinical practice change integration and project implementation respectively. The PDSA framework is widely used to test the effectiveness of quality improvement projects in healthcare organizations. It focuses on planning the project (P), trying or conducting the intervention (D), studying or observing the results (S), and acting on the lessons learned (A) (Institute for Healthcare Improvement, 2022). Kurt Lewin’s change model maintains that change in organizations occurs in three steps namely; unfreeze (disruption of existing structures and preparing stakeholders for the change), change (the actual reforms), and refreeze (inclusion of new practices into the standard operating procedure) (Arabi et al., 2022). The project team will evaluate the project based on the named model and framework.
The project leader will have to utilize leadership strategies to ensure the successful implementation of the project. The specific leadership strategies that are critical and effective to the implementation of the planned project include; team building skills, effective communication, proper planning, critical thinking abilities, leading by example, and effective decision-making (Ali et al., 2021). The primary goal of the project leader is to ensure that the number of admissions that have short lengths of stay is decreased.
