Topic: Enhancing cyber security in the aviation industry
This project targets all major stakeholders in the aviation industry, including airline industries, employees, tenants, passengers, government authorities, local communities, suppliers, media, and unions. This is because all these stakeholders use digital gadgets or keep digital information. For instance, everybody involved in the aviation industry uses a smartphone and other smart gadgets like computers whether they are employees of these bodies or clients or customers. These digital gadgets accumulate a lot of personally identifiable information (PII) such as people’s location, names, where they work, facial identifications, Telephone numbers, Geographic data, FAX numbers, Social Security numbers, email addresses, medical record numbers, account numbers, among others (Ukwandu et al., 2022). Moreover, most major aviation stakeholders such as airlines and unions collect such sensitive information from clients and employees.
This personally identifiable information (PII) accumulating in the aviation industry makes the industry and everyone involved vulnerable to cyberattacks. Cybercriminals target this PII to use it for nefarious motives, including extorting the victims for money and selling PII for a lot of money in the black market. Emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity helps create awareness against cyberattacks, build vigilance among vulnerable people, and hence protect them from falling victims of cyberattacks (Ukwandu et al., 2022). Therefore, the findings of this study will encourage aviation organizations, as well as, individuals in the sector to maintain cybersecurity. As a result, as they collect and share sensitive and personal data, they ensure to protect it from cyber-attacks.
