Discussion Board: Patient Safety

Leaders of healthcare organizations should make efforts to develop a patient safety culture to drive clinical practices that prevent adverse events and improve patients’ well-being. Granel-Giménez et al. (2022) define patient safety culture as a work environment that encourages practices aimed at preventing errors and adverse events to patients. In their article titled “Effects of the organizational culture for patient safety in the hospital setting: A systematic review,” Silva et al. (2021) reviewed published literature to gather evidence presenting the impacts of hospital organizational culture on safety and well-being of hospitalized patients. This discussion board will present the findings of the study by Silva et al. (2021).

Silva et al. (2021) indicates that there is a positive association between a hospital’s organizational culture and safety and well-being of hospitalized patients. The researchers conducted a study with the aim of identifying the impacts of organizational culture on the safety of patients in a hospital context. They reviewed published literature, without conducting meta-analyses, of articles obtained from major nursing databases including EMBASE, LILACS, BVS, Medline, PubMed, and CINAHL. The researchers reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2020. From the review, Silva et al. (2021) found that a positive hospital organizational culture fosters a culture of safety that encourages the notification and identification of adverse events. Such a culture improves the quality of health care and encourages the leadership to implement quality improvement initiatives to protect the safety of hospitalized patients. Similar findings are supported by Braithwaite et al. (2017), who discovered that an organizational and workplace culture that supports patient safety is associated with positive patient outcomes in relation to pain management and improved patient experience. Evidence presented by Silva et al. (2021) guides hospitals to develop an organizational culture that encourages patient safety in order to improve the health outcomes and well-being of hospitalized patients.
