The causes and processes of initiation

Under causes and processes of initiation, Fullan (2016) is trying to explain the broad phases of the change process. The first phase is the initiation, which consists of the process that leads up to and includes a decision to adopt or proceed with a change. Causes of initiation or change are the variables that influence whether a change will be started (Fullan, 2016). They include educational innovations, differential access to information, advocacy by administrators and teachers, government policy, and others.

The causes and processes of implementation and continuation

Implementation and continuation are the last two phases of the educational or curriculum change process. Implementation involves first experiences of attempting to put an idea or reform into practice (Fullan, 2016). The educators must understand the impact of implementation and ask themselves about certain things that would have to change if the innovation or new program is fully implemented. Implementation becomes successful based on the clarity and complexity of the program. Continuation, which is the last phase entails incorporating the change into the ongoing part of the system (Fullan, 2016). Continuation is affected by the availability of funds and the interest of the administration to continue supporting the change.

Plan and cope with change

Planning helps to design strategies that improve results, minimize bias, refine, and strengthen the program. When planning fails the program also fails (Fullan, 2016). Planning can fail due to two reasons: if it fails to take into account local context and culture and when too much emphasis is on the planning relative to the action part. People who are on the receiving end of the change will need some coping mechanisms (Fullan, 2016) Change is never a smooth path and may come along with turbulences.
