 Introduction

Compliance is a critical element of patient care. One is said to be compliant if they follow instructions and guidelines of care provision. Patient education is critical in enhancing compliance and more positive patient outcomes (Sassen, 2018). The purpose of this paper is to answer all the questions provided for the completion of the assignment.

Define patient compliance and explain its importance in your field

Patient compliance is the ability of the patient to follow medical instructions as provided by the healthcare provider. It can also be defined as the extent to which the patient’s actual behavior coincides with medical instructions and advice (Steiner, 2019). Compliance improves the process of recovery. It leads to positive patient outcomes, reduced cases of adverse events, and a reduction in mortality and morbidity rates. Therefore, nurses should urge patients to uphold compliance.

Identify the healthcare professionals\’ role in compliance and give examples of ways in which the healthcare professional may contribute to noncompliance

It is the role and responsibility of health care professionals to maintain compliance within the care setting. They can do that by following keenly the clinical guidelines put in place to provide safe and effective evidence-based care (Steiner, 2019). Health care professionals can also improve compliance by working in collaboration with each other to avoid medication errors. Furthermore, health care professionals can enhance compliance through patient education during discharge to ensure they adhere to the instructions.

Compare compliance and collaboration

Collaboration and compliance are distinct practices in health care. Collaboration involves working together with patients and other care providers to achieve treatment goals (Prentice et al., (2020). On the other hand, compliance involves following medical or clinical guidelines and instructions as provided by a health care provider to improve health (Steiner, 2019). For instance, taking medications, changing lifestyle, or changing behavior exactly as advised by a physician.

Compare and contrast patient education in the past with that practiced today

In the past, sources of information were limited compared to today. In the past, patients relied on direct education by healthcare professionals, however, today patients can learn by themselves through the internet (Sassen, 2018). Although self-education is beneficial, most patients may not be able to appraise and identify the most appropriate information.

Explain the importance of professional commitment in developing patient education as a clinical skill

Patient education is an important clinical skill that every health care professional should possess. Through education, patients gain useful knowledge about their health conditions and what they need to do to improve their health (Sassen, 2018). Education improves compliance, enhances recovery, and prevents readmissions. Therefore, patient education is an important clinical skill.

Explain the three categories of learning and how they can be used in patient education

The three categories of learning include cognitive, affective, and psychomotor/behavioral learning. Regarding cognitive learning, students are taught to develop clinical skills and acquisition of such knowledge. Effective learning improves feelings, emotions, and attitudes towards learning (Sassen, 2018). It involves active listening, participation in class, and the ability to see the worth of something and express it. Psychomotor involves using the learned knowledge to solve real-life situations.

List three problems that may arise in patient education and how they would be solved?

Three of the many problems facing patient education include lack of adequate resources, lack of time, and language barriers. Proper planning can help address issues of resources and time (Sassen, 2018). The language barrier can be addressed by hiring an interpreter to ensure communication happens between the patient and the educator.

List some methods of documentation of patient education
