Competency
Communicate scholarly findings as an integral part of professional communication in the field of nursing.
Scenario
Communicating scholarly finings in a professional journal requires thoughtful steps to complete. As a nursing professional a goal should always be to share your scholarly findings with the professional community.
You recently completed a research study for your graduate work. You decide to present your findings in professional journal. The journal you selected requires an abstract.
Instructions
Summarize one of the options below to reflect in an abstract of no more than 250 words. The abstract should include:
- A clearly stated objective,
- A description of the methods used in gathering, processing, and analyzing data,
- A summary of the results, and
- Conclusion with key findings and their implications.
- Option 1: Family members caring for patients with Alzheimer’s disease in a mid-west mid-sized town were surveyed to determine their needs for personal health, privacy, and a perceived need for respite support. Five hundred families were asked to participate yet 350 responded to the survey. The data collected shows that the 73% of the family members selected responses that showed that they felt isolated in their efforts to care for the family member with Alzheimer’s disease. 71.5% reported that their health has declined during the time of caring for their family member, and 83% reported a lack of respite services to help in the care processes.
- Option 2: A large medical facility in a metropolitan center completed a 6-month study that explored the value of phone call follow ups to mothers that delivered their babies in the healthcare system. In this time frame 2,045 women delivered. Of this number, 93% were willing to be a part of the study. In this six-month time frame each mother was contacted four times at weekly intervals. Data suggested that women reported symptoms of depression at a higher rate if their baby was delivered prematurely or suffered health challenges required a hospital stay longer than the mother. Referral to mental health service providers were made for patients who scored high on the depression scale used. 10% of respondents reported symptoms of post-partum psychosis.

Communicating Scholarly Findings: Abstract
Objective: Mothers who give birth in healthcare settings are normally discharged from the hospital within a few days of delivery to allow them to recover at home. With technological advancements in the contemporary world, healthcare professionals can now make phone calls to discharged mothers in order to understand their progress and address their concerns. The objective of the study was to assess the value of phone call follow-ups for mothers that gave birth to babies in the healthcare system.
Methodology: The study was conducted in a large medical facility in a metropolitan center. At the time of the study, 2,045 women delivered in the hospital. 93% of the women (n=1,902) were willing to participate in the study. Data was collected over a period of 6 months in this group of mothers. Each mother was contacted four times at weekly intervals during the six-month time frame. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used to process and analyze the collected data.
Results: Data suggested that women reported symptoms of depression at a higher rate if their baby was delivered prematurely, suffered health challenges, or required a hospital stay longer than the mother. Referrals to mental health service providers were made for patients who scored high on the depression scale used. 10% of respondents reported symptoms of post-partum psychosis.
Conclusion: Phone call follow-ups are of great value for mothers that give birth to babies in healthcare systems.
Implications of Findings: Reaching out to mothers through phone call follow-ups allows nurses to identify mothers who are at increased risk of developing postpartum depression. This helps them to make timely referrals to mental health service providers.
