A notorious problem in nursing is nursing shortage. Nursing staff shortage impacts directly patient care and safety. Budget cuts are the main culprits for this problem due to the high cost of healthcare, facilities aim to save cost by cutting down on staffing. I have witnessed this first hand at my facility which is a psychiatric hospital. The shortage in nursing staff increased the cases of injuries and violence throughout the hospital. The consequences from these incidents resulted in multiple law suits from patients and staff alike. In addition, the facility was front page news multiple times resulting in the intervention of the Joint Commission who accredits 22,000 health care organizations throughout the United States to step in and place deadlines for administration to increase their nursing staff throughout the facility.
