Changing Social Welfare Policies
Society is experiencing many challenges that require policy changes to address. Ever since the beginning of the human race, some problems have persisted. For instance, in the 1960s, society experienced female oppression, poverty, and other problems. According to Chappell (2011), in the 1960s, mothers started to organize and demand their rights to welfare. Also, white liberals began to launch anti-poverty crusades. During this time, the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) entitled poor single mothers and their children to some mandatory cash (Chappell, 2011). The event in the 1960s would have been beneficial to Anita and her children.
Considering the challenges Anita is experiencing, policy changes can be recommended to help her solve some of her problems. First, the 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA), should be a subject of change to provide some mandatory cash to poor single mothers (Chappell, 2011). The money in addition to what Anita receives from her labor, would make a difference and help her take care of her children better. Anita is struggling financially because the money she makes is not enough to solve most of her problems (Miles et al., 2019). Additionally, a policy to strengthen patrol and crackdowns on drug dealers and violence promoters in the streets is recommended to bring back order in the neighborhood. These policies would help allow Anita’s son to have no otherwise but to go to school. He would also desist from disrespectful and offensive behaviors because he would have no place to hide from the authorities (Miles et al., 2019). Another policy recommendation is more sticker penalties for men who abscond their responsibilities to compel them to take care of their children as required.
