Banner Health’s Readiness for the Next Decade
Introduction
Healthcare networks across the United States are useful in improving access to healthcare, quality of care, as well as positive patient outcomes. A health care network consists of a group of healthcare providers working in collaboration to improve health (Banner Health, 2020). Health care providers may include physicians, hospitals, labs, hospices, and others. Banner Health is among the most popular healthcare networks in the country. Banner Health has its headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona. It is a not-for-profit health care system that consists of about 28 hospitals (Banner Health, 2020). In that regard, the purpose of this paper is to assess the readiness of Banner Health to meet the health care needs of citizens in the next decade.
Banner Health
The health network discussed in this paper is Banner Health. It is one of the largest health care networks in the United States. Banner health provides various kinds of health care services including medical equipment, family clinic services, and many more (Banner Health, 2020). Banner Health also offers specialized health care services such as organ transplant, heart treatment, maternity, mental health services, as well as rehabilitation services. This description shows that Banner Health is committed to accomplishing its mission, vision, and other organizational goals.
The mission of Banner Health is to promote access to health care so that to improve the lives of patients and community members. The organization’s vision is to be known nationally for the excellent provision and innovation of health care (Banner Health, 2020). The organizational culture of Banner Health puts customer interest and experience first above individual employees’ needs. Banner Health is a non-profit organization, hence, focuses on serving the community rather than making profits.
Banner Health’s Overall Readiness
Banner Health has put in place good strategies that will enable it to meet the healthcare needs of U.S. citizens in the next decade. Banner health is doing very well in terms of the implementation and adoption of value-based reimbursement models to ensure the provision of quality healthcare services (Banner Health, 2020). Implementation and adoption of a value-based reimbursement model are one of the best ways believed to enable Banner health to meet the health needs of the citizens in the next decades. Another element of readiness is reflected in the organization’s mission. The mission of Banner health provides direction and focus for the organization to ensure it maintains its value in the community (Banner Health, 2020). Banner Health ensures access to healthcare by providing affordable healthcare services. The organization has adequate health care providers to ensure all the citizens receive timely care and reduce long waiting hours (Banner Health, 2020). The physical structures and geographical locations of the hospitals are accessible to everyone including people with physical disabilities.
The organizational culture and values of Banner Health play an important role in ensuring its readiness to serve citizens in the next decade. For example, Banner Health encourages collaboration among health care providers to ensure effective and efficient care (Banner Health, 2020). The organizational leadership style also contributes immensely to its readiness. Banner Health has a board of directors who are committed to realizing organizational success. The strong and enthusiastic leaders are the foundation that the organization stands, making it stand out among other care networks (Banner Health, 2020). These characteristics such as collaboration, putting first the interest of customers, making health accessible, and good leadership make the health care network ready to serve citizens better in the next decade.
A Strategic Plan for Addressing Issues Regarding the Network Growth, Nurse Staffing, Resource Management, and Patient Satisfaction
Banner health must put in place good strategies to ensure that the Health Network continues to grow and thrive in the industry. For example, banner health can establish new facilities in other areas to expand the health care network across the country. Expansion to another will contribute to the growth of the network to reach new patients and communities (Martin, 2018). Regarding nurse staffing, Banner Health may urge the hospitals within the network to recruit more nurses to maintain the recommended nurse-to-patient ratio. Nursing continuing education and training should be enhanced to help nurses update their skills and achieve a higher level of education (Martin, 2018). Nurses should be motivated through awards and good salaried and allowances to enhance staff retention.
Furthermore, resource management is an important element of health care that determines the quality of health care provided, as well as, whether or not the organization will exist in the future. Therefore, Banner Health should develop a more comprehensive policy regarding resource management (Martin, 2018). Wasted resources can be a big challenge to organizational growth and development. Banner Health can only be ready to meet the health needs of citizens in the next decade if there are adequate resources. Banner Health must also address issues related to patient satisfaction. To achieve this goal, the Network must work together to promote justice and fairness in their workplaces (Martin, 2018). Patient satisfaction can be achieved through the provision of quality health care and more positive patient outcomes. Health care providers may assess patients’ satisfaction through various ways to identify gaps that need to be addressed to achieve patient needs.
Potential Issues Within Banner Health and their influence on the Strategic Plan
Banner Health has a good working environment and culture that contributes to its success, however, there are specific issues that might hinder its strategic plan from becoming a reality. The culture of Banner Health fails to acknowledge the importance of incorporating junior staff (nurses, physicians, and other care providers) into decision-making processes (Banner Health, 2020). Due to this behavior, the organization does not acknowledge the critical problems or concerns of its employees. However, many positive issues can help Banner Health achieve its strategic plan. For example, the network has about 28 hospitals and is recognized among the largest health care networks in the country. This is an advantage because it is capable of raising revenue to fund its strategic plan (Banner Health, 2020). Although most of its values are good, the Health network must be ready to listen to all its employees and offer appropriate feedback.
A Model to Support the Implementation of the Strategic Plan
For successful implementation of the strategic plan, Banner Health may apply the goal-based strategic model that works from the future to the present. To use this model, people involved in strategic planning may select sometime in the future and suggest certain goals to achieve at that particular time (Perrin, 2020). This is the best model for Banner Health because it identifies possible challenges and opportunities that might arise and influence the implementation of the strategic plan. It allows the planners to evaluate the organizational mission, vision, and core goals to determine possible challenges and opportunities (Perrin, 2020). Goal-based planning enables the creation of measurable goals to address the challenges.
Conclusion
Banner Health is one of the recognized healthcare networks in the US. Based on its culture and values, mission, and vision, Banner Health is ready to meet the health needs of citizens in the next decade. Banner Health needs a well-developed strategic plan to address issues of network growth, nurse staffing, resource management, and patient satisfaction. The goal-based strategic planning model can help attain successful implementation of the strategic plan.
