Section 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity
Academic integrity and writing are closely intertwined. Academic integrity refers to the honest and ethical pursuit of knowledge and the adherence to moral principles in academic settings. Writing is a fundamental aspect of academic work, and maintaining integrity in writing is essential to upholding academic standards (Poitras Pratt & Gladue, 2022). Academic integrity in writing involves properly citing sources, avoiding plagiarism, and presenting one’s ideas and research honestly and transparently. By ensuring that their writing is academically honest, nurse scholars contribute to the credibility and reliability of the knowledge they produce.
Professional practices and scholarly ethics go hand in hand in the nursing profession. Professional practices encompass the standards, behaviours, and ethical principles that guide nurses in their interactions with patients, colleagues, and the healthcare system (Alba, 2018). On the other hand, scholarly ethics pertain to the ethical conduct of research, the dissemination of knowledge, and contributions to the profession. Nurses are responsible for upholding ethical standards in their professional practices, ensuring patient safety and confidentiality, and promoting the well-being of individuals and communities. By adhering to scholarly ethics, nurse scholars engage in research and scholarly activities that are grounded in integrity and respect for the rights and welfare of participants (Alba, 2018).
Grammarly, Turnitin, and paraphrasing contribute significantly to academic integrity. Grammarly is a writing assistant tool that helps identify grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors, ensuring that the written work is clear, concise, and well-structured. Turnitin is a plagiarism detection tool that compares submitted work against a vast database of sources, detecting any instances of plagiarism (Poitras Pratt & Gladue, 2022). It encourages students and scholars to attribute ideas and give credit to the original authors properly. Paraphrasing is the process of restating information in one’s own words while maintaining the meaning and integrity of the original source. It helps prevent plagiarism by demonstrating an understanding of the material and presenting it in a unique way.
Section 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work
I intend to employ several strategies to maintain integrity and ethics in my academic work as a student in the MSN program. Firstly, I will ensure that I properly cite all sources and give credit to the original authors when using their work. This will involve using citation styles such as APA or MLA consistently and accurately. Secondly, I will utilize Grammarly as a writing assistant to enhance the clarity and correctness of my writing (Poitras Pratt & Gladue, 2022). It will help me identify and correct any grammar or spelling errors, ensuring that my work is of high quality. Additionally, I will use Turnitin to review my papers and ensure that I have properly attributed all sources and avoided unintentional plagiarism.
Maintaining integrity and ethics will be crucial in my professional work as a nurse (Haddad & Geiger, 2018). I will prioritize patient safety and confidentiality, ensuring that I uphold ethical principles in my interactions with patients and their families. I will adhere to professional standards and guidelines, continuously updating my knowledge and skills to provide evidence-based care. I will also engage in scholarly activities, such as research and publication, to advance nursing knowledge and practice. To support my professional integrity, I will participate in continuing education programs, attend conferences, and join organizations like the American Nurses Association (ANA) to stay informed about current ethical practices and professional standards (Haddad & Geiger, 2018).
I aim to maintain academic and professional integrity throughout my journey as a nurse scholar by implementing these strategies and utilizing resources like Grammarly, Turnitin, and professional organizations.
