NETWORK MEMBER 1

 Name: Chinedu Nwabude

Title: Psychiatric mental health NP

Organization: Parkland Hospital, Dallas Tx

Academic or Professional: Professional

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

  • Notes: Since my undergraduate years, I have known Chinedu. He was pursuing

his master’s degree at Walden University at that time. This person is a graduate of Walden University. Currently, he works as a psychiatric nurse practitioner in Dallas, Tx. Chinedu assisted me and explained to me some courses when I was in nursing school. He also helped me when I was preparing for my NCLEX. The main reason why I chose this person is that he has supported me ever since I started thinking of joining Nursing school. He keeps checking on me daily and he keeps me updated with his current role as a nurse practitioner. He encouraged me to further my career, and this is one of the reasons why I decided to pursue my master’s at this University. Chinedu is knowledgeable and I believe that he is a great network since he already went through the process of obtaining his master’s at Walden. He will be able to answer some questions I will encounter while attending this program and as a practicing nurse. For all the above reasons, I am confident that I will succeed and accomplish my goals.

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: Tammy Chambers is a manager of stepdown units at Willis Knight Pierremont Shreveport, LA. She has worked as a critical care nurse for over 8 years, and she has a lot of experience in nursing. The reason why I chose Tammy is that she helped me become the nurse I am right now. She was my first boss after Nursing school. She helped me build and grow my confidence when I was a new nurse. She made sure that there was a safe environment in the unit for both staff and patients. Tammy checks on me occasionally and she is always available to help when I need anything. This individual is going to help me be successful in this new journey by checking on me and making sure that I am on track with accomplishing my goals. Every month, I sit down with Tammy, and she asks me what my goals for the month are and how I am going to accomplish them.  Tammy is always available to adjust my work schedule if I need time to focus on my school. This individual is going to help me be successful as a graduate student and as a practicing nurse.

I chose Natasha as my academic network because she answered all my questions and helped me send in my application. She made a follow-up call every week till the day I got accepted. Natasha is helpful because she is already assisting me in this class. She calls me twice a week and asks me if I have any questions regarding this class or this program. I am guaranteed that Natasha will be a great resource while I pursue this degree and will help me along the way as I work to become a successful nurse practitioner.

We met in pathophysiology class, and we became good study buddies ever since. We studied together all prerequisites and joined nursing school at the same time. We graduated together and decided to move to a different state together. We have worked as critical care nurses in the same city, and we are roommates. I chose her as my academic network because we have the same goals and vision.  She started her online MSN in education this fall. Week 2 | Part 2: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

I have analyzed the relationship between academic integrity and writing, as well as the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. I have also identified strategies I intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work while a student of the MSN program, as well as my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. The results of these efforts are shared below.

Directions: In the space below craft your analysis/writing sample, including Part 1 (The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity) and Part 2 (Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work).

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection between Academic and Professional Integrity

Relationship between academic integrity and writing

Integrity is an essential area in the academic industry, just as it is important in other industries. Academic integrity refers to a commitment to demonstrate moral and honest behaviors in an academic setting (Duquesne University, 2020). Plagiarism is an example of a violation of academic integrity by nursing students. Plagiarism occurs in writing when one uses another person’s ideas, data, or words without acknowledgment or proper paraphrasing (Duquesne University, 2020).. It is where academic integrity meets writing because students are expected to acknowledge the author when using their ideas and use proper paraphrasing skills to avoid plagiarism and maintain high academic integrity. Students can also work together to write assignments, which is another form of academic integrity issue (Duquesne University, 2020). This kind of academic dishonesty is called student collusion, which is highly unacceptable.

Relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics

Scholarly ethics advocate for academic integrity in learning institutions. Academic integrity is often described as the pursuit of knowledge and understanding honestly and straightforwardly (Duquesne University, 2020). These important virtues are required in nursing practice. Therefore, being able to apply scholarly ethics also reflects the student’s ability to apply professional ethics. Only through a proper understanding of academic work can students become highly qualified professionals. In nursing, having insufficient professional knowledge can lead to the destruction of lives (Duquesne University, 2020). Therefore, authors are responsible to provide proper information in good faith, and students should honestly pursue and understand the knowledge to enable them to perform properly their professional practices effectively.

How Grammarly, Safe Assign, and paraphrasing Contribute to academic integrity

Grammarly is a highly utilized technology to improve grammar in written works. Students and professionals use this technology to ensure there are no grammatical errors in a written paper. Besides grammar, plagiarism is another academic integrity issue (Allen et al., 2017). Safe assign, Turnitin, and paraphrasing are strategies that are used to remove plagiarism. Safe assign ensures the academic paper is edited and checked to remove plagiarism. According to Allen et al. (2017), such technology and skills are used to refrain those who may be tempted to cheat or plagiarize other people’s work.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Strategies to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics in the academic work while a student of the MSN program

As stated above, academic integrity is an important aspect of learning. Therefore, MSN students should strive to maintain this important virtue. To maintain academic integrity, it would be necessary to use writing technologies such as safe assign and grammar, as well as, proper paraphrasing skills (Allen et al., 2017). These tools and skill sets help produce original results that are free from grammatical errors and plagiarism. According to Gaines (2021), cheating and collusion are all forms of academic dishonesty and violate the integrity of academics. Therefore, these behaviors will be prohibited to maintain ethics and integrity in academic work.

Strategies to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics in the professional work as a nurse

To maintain professionalism in nursing practice, the ANA code of ethics is the way to go. Following the guidelines provided in the nursing code of ethics would be very crucial for a nurse who wants to maintain professionals (Gaines, 2021). Some of the virtues a nurse is expected to manifest include compassion, respect for other people, empathy, and others. Furthermore, nurses should practice per the principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, fairness, and justice. All these qualities as provided in the ANA nursing code of ethics.
